I shifted and met Asher’s eyes. He stood behind Chase’s shoulder, staring at me with electric blue irises. I gasped as I took in their unnatural glow.

“What is it?” Chase whipped around. “Oh… Bro, your eyes.”

Asher continued to stare. Was it just me, or did he seem unable to look away?

An uncomfortable feeling settled around my torso. It was like an invisible rope had wrapped around my waist and tugged me Asher’s direction.

If I was strong enough to move, I had no doubt I would crawl over to him on my hands and knees. The feeling was that strong.

As it was, the most I could do was prop myself up on my elbows.

“Asher,” Chase barked. “Reign it in.”

Asher’s nostrils flared. His eyelids closed.

Just like that, the tugging sensation ceased.

I inhaled sharply and just barely kept myself from falling backward.

“W-what was that?” I looked at Chase. His lips pressed together. I looked back at Asher.

As if sensing my gaze, his eyelids parted. His irises were no longer glowing beacons in the night.

“Nothing,” Asher replied.

That’s a lie.

I managed to push up onto my hands. My arms locked and promptly started to shake.

Chase kneeled and placed his hand against my upper back, taking some of the weight off my arms.

Asher released another displeased growl, but he cut himself off with an aggravated bellow. “Damnit!” He stomped away, tugging at his hair.

The tugging feeling returned with a vengeance, pulling tighter the farther away Asher moved. The urge to go to him was intense.

I leaned forward, as if to pursue him. Chase placed a staying hand on my shoulder. I looked at him, surprised to see a scowl marring his mouth.

I didn’t believe I’d ever seen Chase scowl.

Panic gripped my chest.

“What’s going on?” I whispered. “What’s happening to me?”

Did the sorcerer’s magic do something to me?

I knew so little of magic and its repercussions. The possibilities were frightening.

“Nothing,” Chase repeated his pack member’s reply. Seeing my fearful expression, he lost his scowl and sighed. Then, he added, “Nothing bad is happening to you, Blair. You’re safe.”

“Don’t lie to me,” I pleaded. “Something feels…off.”I couldn’t think of another way to describe it.

Something happened during the sorcerers’ attack, and I needed to know what.

Chase’s jaw ticked. He looked over his shoulder. “Care to explain, Asher?”

The shifter had stopped walking when he was twenty feet away, releasing me from the alarming pull trying to draw me to him.

Asher stared off into the night, not bothering to turn around. “No.”
