Chase immediately drew back, holding his hands up in innocence. “Relax, man. I’m not a threat. I’m just trying to help her.”

Asher snarled again.

Chase dropped his head, bowing in submission to the angry shifter.

My head whipped between them. I’d always assumed Asher was the more powerful of the two, but I’d never seen him assert his dominance before.

“What is going on?”

“Nothing.” Asher curled his hands into tight fists at his sides, as if trying to hold back and not throttle his friend.

Nothing…I was so tired of hearing that word.

I wanted real answers, and I was determined to get them.

Without pause, I stepped closer to Chase. His blond head shot up, and his eyes widened when he saw me open my arms for an embrace.

Before I could touch Chase, strong arms banded around my waist and pulled me away. Asher’s chest vibrated as he barked over my head. “Don’t touch her!”

“Dude! I didn’t even do anything!”

Asher didn’t care. His entire body shook with fury. If I weren’t positioned between them, I had a feeling Asher would’ve launched himself at Chase.

With my back pressed against Asher’s muscular front, I suddenly regretted getting in the middle of the Wilds shifters. My stomach fluttered with excitement, and my pulse spiked every time his exhale brushed the side of my neck.

“Asher,” I tapped his arm. “Let me go.”

He didn’t listen.

Instead, his embrace tightened, and he drew me closer. My heart thumped, and a vaguely familiar warmth began growing where his forearm brushed against the exposed skin above my waist. I needed to put some space between us, STAT.

“Asher, I’m serious. Let me go.”

Still, he did not.

I tried wiggling out of Asher’s hold, but his grip had no slack.

“You need to let me go before Hunter comes looking for me.” The last thing I needed was for my insecure partner to catch me in this position.

Asher responded with a ferocious growl which would make even the bravest shifter almost pee her pants.

I shrieked when Asher crushed me against him. Air was shoved out of my lungs, leaving me gasping for breath.

Chase moved closer, earning himself a snarl.

Chase scowled at the male holding me. “Get a grip, Asher. You’re losing it. Let Blair go.”

Again, Asher did not.

“Did the sorcerers hit him with a spell or something?” I gasped, unable to draw a complete breath.

Chase’s jaw ticked. His eyes traveled over his packmate. “No, he wasn’t hit with a spell.”

“Then how do you explain this?” I slapped the forearm banded around my midsection. Asher didn’t react, not until I uttered my next words. “Asher, please let me go. You’re hurting me.”

And just like that, Asher’s tight grip disappeared.

Not anticipating my release, I didn’t have time to brace myself. My weak legs buckled.
