Asher scanned my face, and it took all my will power not to fidget under his scrutiny. Seriously, the intensity rolling off this guy was at another level.

“You’re right. That was rude of me. I apologize.”

I… had nothing to say to that.

I’d expected him to deny being an ass, not own up to it.

I turned back to the drunken crowd. “Apology accepted.”

Asher chuckled, and the sound did funny things to my stomach. “Is that why you refuse to look at me?”

I made a point of dramatically dragging my gaze back to him. “I thought you had somewhere you needed to be.” The words didn’t sound as harsh as I’d intended.

“I do, but it can wait.” He tucked his hands into his front pockets.

I refused to let his casual stance lower my defenses. “It didn’t seem like it could wait just a few minutes ago.”

“That was before I had a reason to stay.”

I blinked.

WasIhis reason to stay?

Though the question was on the tip of my tongue, I refused to ask. Pride wouldn’t allow it.

“Chase said you two were in town to visit acquaintances.” I let the statement hang in the air, allowing him to choose if he wanted to grab onto the new conversation piece or not.

“We are.”

“I assume it’s work related.”

Asher grinned. “And why is that?”

“The term ‘acquaintance’ is a little formal, don’t you think?”

He gave me an appraising look. “Pretty and clever.”

I couldn’t stop the flush from rising to my cheeks.

Seriously… what was wrong with me?

I’d never been so affected by a good-looking guy. I needed to get out of there. I was leaving for the Alpha Games tomorrow, and I couldn’t afford the distraction the night was turning out to be.

My eyes sought out Stephanie. Lo and behold, my friend had abandoned the smitten businessman and was chatting with Chase.

The two looked like models from a magazine with their tall, lean figures and form-fitting clothes. Leaning against the bar, Stephanie flipped her long, brown hair over her shoulder and shot Chase a dazzling smile, making sure to prop her hip out to show off her killer figure under the slinky, blue dress.

I frowned. Getting her away from the businessman was going to be hard enough, but now that she set her sights on a new conquest, there was no telling how long I’d be stuck at the bar while she weaved her web around Chase.

“Sorry if my friend disappointed you,” Asher said abruptly.

I looked up, surprised to see a disapproving frown marring Asher’s striking face.

“What?”

Asher gestured to where Stephanie and Chase stood. “Chase. He’s not shy about bouncing from one woman to another.”

It took me too long to figure out what he meant. I blamed his distracting presence.
