“Because of her…relationshipwith the alpha.”
I was still watching Kayla, but I didn’t miss the way Chase stiffened.
“What do you mean ‘relationship’?”
I sighed and looked back at him. “Come on, Chase. I’m not stupid. She decorated the alpha’s apartment for me. Clearly, they are close.”
“They are,” Chase allowed warily.
He didn’t elaborate.
I exhaled through my nose. Then, I stated, “Look, she’s clearly sleeping with the alpha. Why would she be nice to the girl who is going to be his mate? Shouldn’t she hate me?”
Chase’s eyes widened, and his jaw went slack.
Then, he burst into a loud laugh.
“Oh man, Blair.” He bent over and continued laughing, slapping his knee theatrically. “You have just made my morning. Phew!”
My forehead creased. I crossed my arms.
Chase continued to laugh. Irritation with his outburst grew. I remained silent as I impatiently waited for an explanation for his reaction.
Too many moments later, Chase finally straightened. “Ah, Blair.” He wiped the tears from the corners of his eyes. “You’re hilarious.”
My jaw clenched. “I don’t see how.”
Chase noticed my irritation and quickly said, “Kayla is not sleeping with the alpha. They’re actually related.”
My arms fell to my side. “Oh.”
I was way off.
“Yeah.” Chase nodded, once again grinning. “But I’m sure our alpha would be glad to know you are concerned about his lovers.”
I cringed. “I’d appreciate if you don’t mention this to him or Kayla.” I didn’t want either of them to get the wrong idea.
“I think I can manage that.” Chase winked.
I shook my head at him.
“Are you two done chatting yet?” Kayla called from the four-wheeler. She bobbed impatiently in the seat.
Chase lifted a hand, telling Kayla to wait.
The girl huffed, but turned back to stare at the meadow.
“Anything else you want to clear up before I lower the silencing barrier?” he asked.
I bit my lip, then blurted, “Does Kayla know about me and Asher? I mean… does she know about our bond?” I nearly choked on the word. I hadn’t said it out loud since leaving Montana.
His expression sobered. “No. Asher hasn’t said a word to anyone.”
I sighed, but I didn’t know if it was in relief or disappointment.
“Anything else?”
“No.” I managed a small smile. “Thanks.”
