Then Summer heard clapping from behind her and whipped around to see Brock in the doorway, awkwardly holding the card they’d all signed as he clapped.

“You saw that?” Summer’s eyes were wide.

He shook his head. “I swear I just got here.” But the smile on his face told her that he caught at least a bit of it. “When we got back to Deja’s car, we saw the card on her dashboard, and since I have the longest legs …” Then, after seeing whatever expression Summer was currently showing on her face, he said, “Okay, I’m going to go now. Get feeling better, Pavani.” And then he turned and left.

Summer put her hands on her warm face and sat on the bottom edge of Pavani’s bed.

Pavani wiped the last of her laughing tears and said, “That Summergraham was by far the dorkiest, sweetest, funniest thing I’ve witnessed. I think watching that might have made the whole rupturing of my appendix worth it.”

Summer smiled. “Then I guess it was worth embarrassing myself.”

Pavani cleared her throat and took a few deep breaths. “Now tell me what’s happening between you and Brock.”

“Nothing is happening.”

Pavani shook her head. “You’ve both been giving each other looks the whole time you’ve been here. And that look he gave at the end of your Summergraham?Mmm. Yeah, he definitely gave looks then.”

“I can confirm,” Zain said. “Brock was, indeed, giving you looks.”

“I don’t know what’s going on with us. Honestly.”

“I’m just doing the math here,” Pavani said, “and trust me, that’s not easy when recovering from surgery, but your final year as an ambassador was his first year as a recruiter, right? So you’ve worked together a while, and you’ve never looked at each other like that before. What changed?”

Summer lifted her shoulders in a shrug. “I don’t know. We were just assigned to work together on Aquamoose Tracks yesterday. We met at three, just like you and I were going to, and I made him meet in my office. Partly because his office is so boring and partly because I just wanted to see him squirm a bit in mine. There was just something about him being in my space and looking as adorable as he always is.”

Zain nodded. “He is one very nice-looking man.”

“Right? And then we were arguing over what we should do, and I don’t know. There might have been a tiny little spark. And maybe a little zing. A flurry in my stomach. But I’mnotgoing to date him, because you know my track record with dating. A month from now, we’d be broken up, and work would be awkward and no one wants that.”

“Well, when I say I want updates, I definitely mean that I want updates on the status of you and Brock.”

“There aren’t going to be any updates to give you.”

“And I mean daily. And also updates about working together on our baby, because I really need updates on that, too.”

“Or more than daily,” Zain said. “She’s only been away from work for a day and a half, but she’s already showing signs of major withdrawal.”

“True. And Summer?”

“Yeah?”

“I’m glad Brock is working on it with you. Because it’s too much for one person, and I’m definitely not going to be feeling well enough to help you anytime soon. And Brock is on top of everything, so I’m sure he’ll be great.” She paused a moment, then said, “For the event, and for you.”

Summer met Pavani’s eyes and held the gaze, so she’d know she’s serious. “Don’t worry about Aquamoose Tracks at all. We’ve got this. But Pavani, nothing is happening between me and Brock, so work on coming to terms with that so you aren’t disappointed when there are no updates about ‘us’ for me to give you.”

Pavani nodded.

“You’re not planning to work on coming to terms with that at all, are you?”

“Nope!” Pavani said cheerfully. “And I don’t think you should, either.”

Chapter Six

Brock

From the passenger’s seat of Summer’s car, Brock glanced over his shoulder to see if there were any police officers nearby when Summer went through a second yellow light that she really should have stopped at. Then his attention went to the parking stalls as they turned onto Main Street. They had a lot of shopping to do for the supplies they needed for the activities at Aquamoose Tracks. Hopefully they’d be able to find everything in the shops here instead of having to drive all the way to Sioux Falls.

Most of the parking spots were full. After a quick glance down both sides of the street, he wasn’t sure they’d be able to find one at all.
