“He is staying at the motel too. I’ll call the owner and have them keep an eye out so we can get her away without him noticing,” Tim explains.

“Alright. We will get everything ready and in the truck. As soon as y’all get here, we will move her to the truck and get out of here,” I say.

“See you soon,” Hannah says before the call ends, and Marcus gets up to start packing while I talk to Chrissy and Decan.

“We need to be prepared for him being a dirty cop,” Decan says. “I will get a feel for things, and if I can find someone ranking high enough that I know will be a safe person to go to, he needs to be reported so someone will investigate. There is no reason heshouldn’t have been able to find her parents. Even with records I am finding right now that are public records, he would have been able to figure it out. Hell, anyone would have been able to.”

“If there are that many bodies being found… Why is it not all over the news?” I ask.

“Good question. None of it has hit the news since the explosion, and he was only named as a person of interest. They don’t even have a BOLO released for him,” Chrissy says. “He does have warrants, but that’s it.”

“Yeah. Something is off. We are missing something,” I say. “We just need to keep him away from her. I’ll text and update the others. Jesse would fucking jump at the chance to knock a man down a notch, so we could very well have all correspondence go through her.”

“Leave that decision up to Kendra, but yeah. It will be guaranteed to let Jeff know very fast that she isn’t interested if this doesn’t,” Chrissy says.

“Now… cut the shit. Are you two together?” I ask.

“Bell,” Chrissy sighs.

“Come on. Spill the beans, Chrissy. I know you,” I push.

“We are just friends,” she says hesitantly.

“Why are you hiding shit? I’m not our parents, Chrissy. Don’t shut me out.”

“I know, but it’s a long story. I’ll explain when things calm down,” she sighs. “Well, y’all get ready. When you get closer, text me, and we will be there.”

“Just go on over. You have the gate code and the alarm code. Just go in and go to bed. It will be ridiculously early in the morning when we get there.”

“Alright,” she says. “Come down and tell us when you get home, please. And be careful.”

“We will. Love you, Chrissy,” I say.

“Fuck you, Chrissy,” Marcus call’s out with a chuckle. “I mean, love you.”

“Fuck you too, Marcus,” she laughs. “Love you, guys. See you soon.”

I help Marcus get everything into the truck. We take our time, and when we are done, we sit and relax for a while. Hannah and Tim show up soon after, so I scoop Kendra into my arms. She only stirs a little bit when I get us settled in the truck she relaxes again. For the entire trip back, I keep my hand on her to make sure she’s okay. I doze in and out but try to stay awake as much as possible.

When we get home, Marcus comes around and gets Kendra inside while Tim and I get all of the bags inside. I set them up in the guest room downstairs and go upstairs to lie down with Kendra and Marcus. With the gate locked, alarm set, and Kendra fast asleep between us, I can breathe a little easier knowing she is safe. For now.

Chapter Seventeen

Kendra

I groan and stretchas I wake, but I don’t open my eyes. “Mornin’, pretty lady,” I hear someone say. The voice is dramatically and intentionally deep, almost reminding me of…

“Julie!” I gasp. I sit up and freak out for a second, but she wraps me in a hug and pulls me down to the bed.

“Don’t worry. They drugged you and brought you home,” Julie says with a grin when she pulls back to look at me.

“But what about…”

“Hannah and Tim? They’re downstairs making lunch. Bellamy’s sister and man friend are here too,” she says. “Jesse and I are setting up camp too.”

“Why?” I ask.

“Because we love you,” Jesse says, flopping down on the bed beside me. “Your parents are hot for middle-aged people, by the way. No wonder you are so sexy.”
