I released his hair and unbuttoned my blouse, struggling to pull my arms out. The heat was unbearable. I raised my back and tugged it off. Lyall’s head snapped up. His gaze locked on mine.

There was a question in his eyes, but also a hunger. I pushed my bra straps down my shoulders before I peeled away the white lace, baring myself for him.

“No games, Nia.” His voice was low and dangerous.

“No games,” I echoed his words, cupping my breasts. “I’m burning up and I need you inside me.”

His eyes flashed gold for a second. He pulled his fingers out of me, and I watched him lick the glistening digits clean. A sudden cramp made me wince, but it was followed by a gush of liquidthat trickled out of me. Before I could check to see if my period had started, Lyall whipped off his t-shirt.

He was on me in seconds, pinning me down with his hands on my shoulders.

“I think my period just started,” I whispered, panicked at the thought of bleeding on his bed.

Another cramp tore through me like a blade.

“It’s not your period,” he said, voice rough.“It’s a heat. Or ovulation, in human terms.”

Human? What—

I tried to sit up.

His hand closed around my throat.

And for the first time, real fear coiled in my gut.

Amara’s warnings echoed in my ears.

“What do you mean—human?”

His fingers tightened around my neck.

“You’re ma mate, Nia. Am ah shifter—ah wolf. We originate fae Wulver the first of oor kind in the Shetlands,” he said, softly rubbing his thumb over my throat.

I began to tremble in fear, shaking my head.

“No such thing exists. I—Arghhh,” I screamed, clutching my abdomen as another stabbing pain rocked through me.

Tears trickled out and rolled down the sides of my face, disappearing into my hairline, but others followed the same path. I desperately searched Lyall’s face for any sign of deceit, but the fierce determination that burned in his eyes told me he believed every word.

“Get out. I-I want you out of my home,” I stammered, trying to push his hand away, but it didn't budge.

For a second, I saw sorrow, but then his nostrils flared, and his eyes flashed from brown to gold. They gleamed under the artificial light.

“It’s far too late fur that, ma darlin’,” he growled.

Only the growl didn't stop. I stared at his chest. He sounded like a vicious dog ready to attack. My breathing became shuddery as panic ensued. Sweat trickled down my forehead, and my back was slick with it. The bedding grew damp beneath my buttocks, causing the sheets to stick to my flesh.

“Oh god. You did something to me. You did this to me,” I wailed between sobs as the throbbing pain continued.

“Aye, ah did,” he murmured, gently turning my head to the side.

His lips traced my jaw like a lover, not a captor holding my body hostage. It made a mockery of everything I thought this was supposed to be.

“It starts behind the ribs, pressure yae cannae breathe through,” he whispered into my ear.“Then the pulse between yer thighs. Yer throat goes dry. And soon, it’ll hurt not tae be filled. But only ah can take it away, Nia. Only ah cun stop the burn.”

“No. You're lying,” I sobbed, but even as I called him a liar, I realised that I was drawn to his scent.

Another cramp.
