“Please, Savrix,” Favalor bowed low before his leader then lifted his head to request, “May I hold her. I have helped raise many siblings. I know how to soothe a baby.”
Dameron narrowed his eyes at the young hunter who had only recently reached adulthood. After a long, tense moment, the Savrix sighed and handed Favalor the baby.
“Keep it quiet,” he commanded.
“Yes, sir,” Favalor bowed again and melted into the crowd while rubbing soothing circles on Tabby’s back.
“What about the pregnant ones?” Scaron, a childhood nemesis of mine asked.
Dameron looked at the three visibly pregnant females, Julie, Kayla, and Taylor, and shook his head. “They aren’t worth the trouble. Leave them here.”
The three women walked to their mates and were embraced in tight hugs. Relief shown on Orsu’s, Drovo’s, and Brexl’s faces. Their mates would be safe while the others still faced unknown danger at the hand of a mad man.
“Tie him up again. He’s coming with us too.” To my surprise, my sire was pointing to me. He looked to Beatrice then back up at me and I had a sinking feeling that whatever his plans were, whatever future torture he could devise, he wanted my mate to watch.
Good. I was glad I was being forced back with the females. At least now I could help set them free.
Chapter 17
Beatrice
“Shhh.” My attention turned to Gabby sushing little Tabby as she tried to rock her back to sleep. Favalor had snuck into the small cabin we’d been placed in as the sun began to set.
“Thank you,” Gabby said as she held her baby close to her chest for the first time in hours.
“No need to thank me,” Favalor whispered. “I wouldn’t trust that male with a rock, let alone a baby.” The young hunter looked around our cramped surroundings and added, “if he takes her again, you have my word I’ll get her back.”
“I don’t understand,” Fatima eyed him with a suspicious look. “Why do you stay here in the valley if you don’t trust Dameron?”
Favalor furrowed his brows and looked to the ground as he thought about how to word his answer. “I wanted to leave with my brother Drovo all those months ago, but he encouraged me to stay with my sire. Since then, I’ve dedicated myself to undoing as much of the Savrix’s plans as I can while trying to remain unnoticed.”
“You’re a double agent,” Hai chimed in.
“I don’t know what that is,” Favalor shrugged, “but if it means I stay here to work against the male I call Savrix, then yes, I am a double agent.”
“That’s a dangerous position to be in,” Gabby commented. “Be careful.”
“I will,” he nodded and then quietly left the cabin through the back window.
“How is she?” I asked Gabby.
“She’s fine,” my friend smiled down at her little one. “I’ll get her back on her normal feeding schedule, and I already had plenty of cloth diapers packed when we were captured. So we’re good there too.”
“Screw that,” Hai scoffed. “She’ll be fine once we get out of here, once weallget out of here.”
“Yeah, that too,” Gabby nodded, then looked out the window at the rising sun.
“Tarak will find a way,” I assured her. “They all used to live here. I’m sure they know of ways to get in and out unnoticed.”
“Once they find out Dameron is no longer holding Tabby, they could just fight their way through,” Anusha surmised and we all stared at her.
“What? It’s a possibility,” she shrugged.
“I just never pegged you for the violent type,” Fatima smiled.
“I’m quiet, not demure. There’s a difference,” Anusha held her chin up in defiance.
“I see you,” Hai nodded with approval.
