“I didn’t sneak,” she answered, her features settling into an unimpressed frown.
“Didn’t you? You didn’t leave a note, figured you’d be back before anyone knew. Were you planning on announcing it over breakfast?”
She heaved a sigh as she shook her head.
“But you fell asleep instead.”
“Yes,” she said with a nod.
Anger burned within him as he slid his eyes closed, one question burning through his mind. It came out as a low growl when he spoke again. “Did you sleep with him?”
Her features turned stony. “No.”
He flicked his gaze down to the floor, her expression twisting his gut. “Sorry, but I needed to know. We are still married.”
“Yeah, well, maybe we shouldn’t be.”
The words sliced his heart like a knife. She stormed from the kitchen toward the foyer, and he followed behind her.
“Where are you going?”
“Out,” she shouted over her shoulder as she swiped her keys from the table and thundered through the door, slamming it behind her. As she twisted, he spotted the pain in her eyes, not just anger, but hurt.
The loud noise startled him as much as their fight.
“Daddy!” Sierra shouted from next to him. “Go after her!”
Grant hesitated for a second, unsure what to do for one of the few times in his life. He took a step toward the door, flinging it open when her engine revved and the Jeep whipped out of the driveway.
He stared after it as she disappeared, possibly for good. As her car disappeared, a cold dread settled in the pit of his stomach. Was this the moment that would define their future? Was this the moment their relationship ended?
CHAPTER 16
JULIA
Julia’s jaw hurt from clenching it so tightly as she growled out her answer to Grant’s ridiculous question. How could he ask her that? She wasn’t the one with the track record of being in and out of relationships. She wasn’t the one who was on her fifth husband with likely dozens of others in between the semi-committed relationships.
“We are still married,” he said to her.
Before she could stop herself, she let the words tumble out. “Yeah, well, maybe we shouldn’t be.”
That surprised even her. Had she just made a choice? She didn’t know because anger roiled within her. She whipped around on her heel and stormed from the kitchen. He pounded behind her, his voice booming. “Where are you going?”
“Out,” she shouted, her features stony as she shot him a glance over her shoulders.
She tried desperately not to let him see her shaky hands as she grabbed her keys and flew through the door. She climbedinto her Jeep, her hands still trembling as she reached for the start button. The second the car sprang to life, she stomped on the accelerator, sending the SUV flying out of the driveway.
She adjusted the vent to blow cool air on her as she threaded through the familiar streets. As the anger burned through her, a mix of frustration and confusion replaced it.
Why was she so upset? Was it only because he’d accused her of sneaking out, of hiding things, of cheating? Was it her pride that he’d hurt or her heart?
Why did he care?
“We agreed to no extramarital affairs,” she repeated in a snarky tone.
She slammed a hand against her steering wheel in frustration. Her knuckles whitened with the force, a physical manifestation of the frustration boiling inside her.
Her mind flashed back to her encounter with Luke last night. She’d felt so guilty. Even this morning, she’d felt awful. She’d intended to be apologetic when they spoke, but that accusatory tone left her hurt and hollow.
