I tilted my head to the side a bit and read the receipt over and over until a smile took over my face. I looked up to see Noa staring at me with an amused smirk quirking up the corners of her mouth.
“Noa, did you…”
“Nope. Not me, chica. Somebody must have gotten it right though. That smile on your face is a complete 180 from when you first walked in.” She was right. I had zero energy or focus when I walked into my office. Now, I was smiling like an idiot andPretty Brown Eyeswouldn’t stop playing on a loop in my head.
“Who the hell…” My words trailed off. “I know damn well this wasn’t Devin. Lately, he’s had his head so far up his own ass he seems to have forgotten I exist.”
Noa pouted and sat in the chair across from my desk. “I knew it had something to do with him.” She rolled her eyes and crossed her legs. “Blake, it’s time to let him go. You’ve been with him for a year now and I’m sorry but I don’t see how he’s helping you. I don’t see how he’s making you smile or glow. You deserve that kind of love.”
“I know I do. But, to be fair, Noa once upon a time Devin made me laugh nonstop.”
“He’s a comedian. That’s literally his job.”
“Okay, point taken.” I grabbed the mysterious cup of coffee and took a sip. How was it the perfect temperature and everything? I hummed a little as the warm, caffeinated liquid hit my tongue. “I don’t know, I guess I miss that part. We were always able to laugh and joke and now everything is flat. You know he tried to have sex with me this morning and when I told him I was going to be late to the gym he said it wasn’t like I was losing weight.” I still rolled my eyes at that comment even as I retold it.
“What?” Noa’s voice popped out loud and rightfully annoyed. “He’s a fuck boy, Blake. With a capital F. I can’t believe he said that shit!”
“Yeah…I know. I don’t know where it even came from because I’ve been maintaining this size for a long time. I was this size when he met me. He didn’t have a problem then.” I took another drink from my cup and an idea slammed into me, erecting red flags everywhere. I flicked my gaze to Noa. “What if…”
“He’s cheating,” she said, finishing my brain rattling thought.
“With a girl who’s smaller than me. I mean it would explain why he felt the sudden need to bring up my weight when it never bothered him before,” I said, tossing my hand into the air. My heart pumped suspicion. Anger and embarrassment flushed my cheeks.
“Shit, Blake…I mean, I know it’s speculation but you might be on to something. Devin is at home alone all day with his boys.”
“You know what? I’m not going to jump to conclusions because I honestly don’t know anything. Whatwillhappen though is a come to Jesus meeting between us. Noa, I can’t stand him in my space anymore.” I pinched the bridge of my nose and exhaled long and deep. “I shouldn’t have to think of it as my space. It should be ours. Instead, I feel like I’m taking care of a teenager with no regard for time or people with structured schedules.”
“Girl, you need to put him out. That’s not okay.”
“I know but we decided to move in together and we have to try. I want to know I did everything I could in our relationship before I consider moving on.” God, I wanted to move on. I wanted to cut ties with Devin and let him find a woman who was a better fit for him. I didn’t believe in quitting because things got hard though. I saw things through.
“Well, you’re better than me because any man who costs me my peace of mind is too damn expensive for my taste.”
“Ugh. I hate when you say poignant shit that hits home, Noa.”
“That’s what I’m here for, chica! You do the same thing for me. Remember when I wouldn’t let Rita go because the sex was so good even though she was toxic?”
I laughed as I recalled her torrid relationship with Rita. “Yeah. I told you that sex wasn’t worth your sanity.”
“Right. So, I’m here to return the favor. Blake, you’re a fucking boss. You don’t need a child to babysit. You need a man who has his shit together and wants to take over the world with you.”
“How’d you know I was planning to take over the world?” I asked, a playful glint in my eye.
“Because I’m your best friend and I know you. You won’t stop until you have the world on a string. I’m sorry but Devin isn’t ready for that type of woman.”
