“Before you do that, Kane,” Alex asked, “would you mind telling us why you think it’d be the American Airlines towers?”
“That’s easy,” Kane explained. “First, its name is American. They hate everything American. If they can destroy something that bears the word, they win. Second, there will be lots of media there, not just local but national, and thousands of people in the audience. The governor is reportedly attending along with lots of other brass. Third,” he pointed to the screen, “Gwen, flip to satellite mode, would you please?”
Green filled the screen. “See all these trees? What a great place to hide with easy escape routes.” He pointed to acres of old-growth trees bordered by four-lane highways.
“Do you know this area?” Alex asked.
“Extremely well. My house is…was…in Stone Creek.” He pointed to the cluster of homes on the other side of the four-lane highway. “I used to run my dog through that whole area.” He pointed to a running path that ran parallel to American Boulevard. “The trail cuts under the street right here, then down onto the American Airlines campus. There are acres and acres of trees filled with trails surrounding the new towers. Some of these are old-growth and sturdy enough to hold the sniper, well-hidden at thirty feet.”
‘Shit,’ and ‘fuck,’ were mumbled under the breath of most of the men.
“It could take us all day and half the night to search that property for possible sniper hides.” Jonathan shook his head.
“I can point out a dozen or more…if you want.” Kane looked sheepish. Staring at the floor he admitted, “I didn’t do real well when I first got back. I always felt like I was being watched. A couple of times I actually climbed up trees with my knife between my teeth ready to kill any sniper.” He shrugged. “There weren’t any, of course.”
If Jonathan hadn’t looked up at that moment, he would have missed the silent exchange that passed between Alex and Quin.
“We need your help,” Alex stated. “I agree with your assessment. Tonight, I want you in the hotel with us. Tomorrow, we’ll recon every inch of this area. Just to satisfy SOCOM and Homeland, we’ll send a team to check out the other possibilities. American Airlines feels right.”
Kane’s back straightened. “I’ll just meet you there in the morning.”
“No, you won’t.” Alex gave the man a hard look. “I’m giving you a soft bed to sleep in tonight, a hot shower in the morning, and a Guardian uniform to wear tomorrow while I work your ass off trying to save lives. You’ll be paid for your time, sailor.”
Jonathan smiled, proud of his boss. Proud of the company he worked for. He was part of a great team. Tomorrow would be interesting, to say the least. He’d missed that mission rush of adrenaline, even though it had only been a few months since he had been in Iraq serving beside Alex and Katlin.
CHAPTER12
Gwen rolledon top of Jonathan, placing open-mouth kisses down his chest, over abs that twitched at her touch, past his outie belly button, and followed the trail of reddish-brown hair. When her chin bumped into his morning erection, she traced the tip with her tongue, licking the silver drop that escaped.
His breath hitched.
He was waking up just the way she’d intended. She opened her mouth and sucked him in, working her tongue over the bottom.
“Sweetheart, that’s enough,” Jonathan said between gasps.
Gwen liked the power she had over him. She pumped his shaft as she sucked hard.
He grabbed her head and pulled her up to face him. “Ride me.” Then he took her mouth with unleashed passion, biting, nipping, and thrusting his tongue in and out.
She slid down on him, slowly, torturing them both. Then, did as ordered. As she glided up and down his wet cock, all too soon she was close, so close. He grabbed her hips, forcing her to stop.
“Condom.” His voice was panicky.
“I’m clean, tested regularly.” When she saw his big eyes, though, worry crept through her. Was he? They hadn’t talked much about past lovers.Damn. She’d never been this reckless, but she’d felt safe with Jonathan. “What about you?”
“Clean. Guardian won’t tolerate anything but a sparkling bill of health.” He didn’t release her hips, though. Just above a whisper, he asked, “Birth control?”
She couldn’t stop the eye roll. “I’m a nurse. What do you think? Of course I’m on birth control, not that I’ve had much reason to worry about getting pregnant. It’s been almost a year since my last lover.”
“I’m buried deep inside you,” Jonathan warned. “We’re not talking about other men you’ve had.”
She leaned forward and told him a truth that frightened her as much as it excited her. “I’ve never had a man like you before. It’s so much better with you. I feel like we’re sharing rather than taking our own pleasure.” She couldn’t say anything more. It was too soon to tell him she was falling in love.
He cupped her face. A breath away, he whispered, “You are very special to me.”
The kiss started as sweet and tender, then ramped to desperate and needy as he thrust his tongue into her mouth while raising his hips, forcing him in deeper and deeper.
She reared up and took over. With her hands on his powerful chest, she rode him hard. He cupped her breasts and rolled her nipples, just the way she liked it.
