As if on cue, he yawns, making me chuckle.

His smile has sleepy written all over it. “Maybe just a few minutes.”

“And you’re sure you want me to stay?”

His eyes close and his smile stays dreamy. “Yes, please.”

I giggle, flopping beside him. “Okay. No problem.”

I don’t care how creepy it might seem. I just can’t pass up the chance to watch this beautiful boy sleep.

His hand grows limp against mine as he drifts into dreamland. I yawn from close proximity, but I don’t feel like sleeping. I’m careful not to shift on the bed as his breathing grows heavier.

My gaze traces the lines of his face, until I’m interrupted by my phone buzzing in my pocket. The harsh noise causes creases to form across Wyatt’s forehead as he moans and stirs in his sleep.

I lean forward and kiss the top of his head. “I’ll be right back.”

I slide out of the bed, hit answer on my phone, and leave thebedroom. “Hello?”

“You want to stay longer?” Mom’s frantic voice yelps through the phone.

“Wyatt needs me,” I whisper as I edge my way into the living area.

“No, you need to come home,” Mom says adamantly. “I can’t deal with the stress of worrying about where you are all the time.”

“I’m with Wyatt,” I say, plonking down on the couch. “He’s in the hotel now, so I don’t even have to go anywhere. Besides, there’s tons of security around. You should feel good that I’m so safe here.”

“I should feel good?” Mom says sharply. “No, Josie. I don’t feel good about you being hours away from us. You’re only sixteen. I don’t like this.”

“Mom, please, don’t...”

“I never should’ve let you go,” she says the words I was hoping she wouldn’t.

“I don’t need the guilt trip.”

“That’s not what this is. I’m being a parent. Your parent.”

“Mom, he’s scared. If I leave, I think he’ll fall apart. Do you really want him to get worse?”

“He has the best medical team in his corner. He’ll be fine.”

“You’re being so flippant. He doesn’t remember any of the people surrounding him. He needs me.” I huff my frustration. “Can’t you all come here instead?”

Mom laughs in shock. “Did you really just say that?”

“Look, I’m not coming home. I can’t.”

“Josie, don’t you dare speak to me like this. Your father and I need you home.”

“I know. I wish I could be in two places at once.”

“You can’t.”

“I’m not getting on a plane.”

Mom’s sigh rattles through the phone. “Why are you making this sodifficult? You know you need to come back.”

“You didn’t see him wig out when Randall spoke about arranging my flight home. He’s not ready for me to go.”
