“I wan-wanted to sign it before...” He pauses, swallowing hard. “I, I didn’t want an-anything to do with them.”

“You don’t really know what was happening before the accident.”

“But it feels right.” He grips the back of my shirt into a bunch. “It’s like the only thing from the present that I can remember.”

I massage his head. “Are you sure?”

He gulps and nods. “It makes sense to me.”

“I’m so sorry, Wyatt. I hate that things have gotten so bad with your parents. I wish I’d known sooner.”

He tilts his head, showing me his red and puffy eyes. “You didn’t know, and that’s the point. My parents got between us.”

My heart pangs in angst, remembering the way Mrs. Hayes spoke about me. She accused me of stunting Wyatt’s recovery. She believed my past influence would’ve stopped Wyatt from becoming famous.

She, along with her husband, are the reason my contact with Wyatt ended.

Hubert approaches the dining table and places a glass of water and a porcelain dish, with two of Wyatt’s pills, down.

“Umm,” Wyatt falters, wiping his face dry. “Can you ask security not to let my parents back in?”

Hubert nods. “Certainly, sir.”

Hubert leaves as discreetly as he entered, and I gesture at the medication. “You should take them. You’ve been in pain for a while.”

He hugs me close, kisses my cheek, and then reaches for the porcelain dish. I pull the water glass closer, knowing his hand will tremble and he doesn’t need the trigger.

He swallows the two pills and sets the glass back down. “I love you, Josie.”

I choke on an intake of air, kneeling beside his chair. His hand presses into my back, keeping me upright.

He smirks. “You okay, cutie?”

“What, what...” I shake my head, mumbling a laugh. “What did you say?”

He crooks a finger, lifting my chin. “Josie Bartlett, I love you so much. You’re my only person and I never want to be without you.”

I throw my arms around him and lay a kiss, filled with heightened bliss, onto his lips. His hands run up and down my back as I shiver with the thrill of his words.

He tucks one of my curls behind my ear, whispering, “Tomorrow, it’s just you and me all day. I’ll ask Hubert to arrange something where no one will find us.”

I get tingles at how clear his words were spoken. “Really?”

His grin stretches. “Yeah. Too many people can make their way in here. I want to be sure we’re alone. I hate looking over my shoulder.”

I nod in overwhelming joy. “Okay, yes, let’s do it.”

He tilts his head at me. “You changed clothes?”

Guilt sours my happiness. “I had a shower after running into your mother downstairs. I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have wasted so much time before I told Erika. I was just overwhelmed, and...”

His hands lock around my wrists. “Joze, it’s okay. It’s not your fault.”

“But they got up here because of me.”

“It’s okay. It happened. They’re not getting back up here. I’m almost glad it happened so I know to keep my distance.”

I pout. “I’m sorry.”
