“I’ll call her back tomorrow,” he promised as he hopped off the barstool and started to tear down his computer setup. He would just text Quinn and ask him to get the last two reports updated in the system, then he could double check everything in the morning.

He reached for his phone to text Quinn as Tori collected up their dishes. He hit the Messages app just as a new text came through.

Chandler: Everhett please call me back. I’m pregnant. Or I was. I’m at the hospital now and they think I’m having a miscarriage.

Pregnant.

Hospital.

Miscarriage.

The words registered in his brain, but he couldn’t conjure up their meaning.

He reread the message once, twice, then a third time just to be certain. He flipped his phone over in his hand, staring at the case to confirm it was really his.

Fuck.

He closed out of the text, then opened it back up. But the words were the same. The message hadn’t changed. The words were right there.

Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.

All her missed calls flashed through his mind. How many times had she tried to call? He couldn’t even check his call log to help him remember, because he had habitually deleted every single missed call from Chandler Cunningham over the last four weeks.

There had been so many missed calls.

He didn’t know how much time passed as he stood in the sunroom, staring at his phone. He couldn’t move. He couldn’t breathe. All he could do was stare.

“Rhett?”

Her voice called to him from far away. Her voice always called to him. She was his beacon. She was his anchor. She was everything he had ever wanted, and he had done exactly what she asked him to do to get to this point. But at what price?

There had been so many missed calls.

“Rhett? What’s wrong?”

He tore his eyes away from the phone, away from the words that had just shoved a knife into his side and twisted.

He finally looked up at his wife. Her expression was marred with concern, her green eyes mirroring back the soul-deep love that had bound them together. They had been through so much. Would this be too much?

He didn’t know what to say. He didn’t know how to tell her. He didn’t know anything anymore.

Horrified, and fully aware there was nothing he could do to protect her from the consequences of what they had done, he handed Tori his phone.

She glanced down at the device, glancing at it for mere seconds before her eyes shot up and her harrowing expression met his gaze.

“I—I didn’t know,” he stammered. “I swear I didn’t know.”
