CHAPTER TWENTY

“For the millionth fuckingtime, we’re not hiring another goddamn chef.Do you want me to say it slower?Or perhaps you assholes want me to draw you a picture?”Wade seethed.

The time had come, he was officially done.He had no patience left, especially not enough to deal with his brothers.

He didn’t miss Zach, Matt and Jonah exchange a look.Or the surreptitious slide of their father’s letter opener across the desk.Out of Wade’s reach. His brothers werehilarious.

They’d been gathered in their dad’s office for ten minutes now, conducting their monthly meeting. But instead of going over expenditures, all anyone wanted to talk about was Riley.

“Take a breath, man,” Jonah piped in.“Unless you want Zach here to give you mouth to mouth?”

“I’m not giving him mouth to mouth.”Zach chuckled.

“I thought you took an oath?”Matt’s head tipped toward their eldest brother.

Jonah was the one who answered as he playfully backhanded Matt’s chest.“He’s off the clock. You gonna step up and take one for the team?”

“You’re a fucktard.”Matt’s grunt was met with louder laughs from Jonah and Zach.

Fuck my fucking life.

Wade buried his face in the mahogany desk he sat in front of while his brothers continued to mock him.

Just as he was ready to reconsider stabbing his brothers with the letter opener, his wrist vibrated.Suddenly, his head shot up, his spine straightened, and his gaze went to his bracelet.Riley.She was thinking about him.Needed him.

Finally.

He’d sent her the touch bracelet over a week ago and this was the first time she’d used it.The first time he’d felt her.

His wrist vibrated again, then again. When it vibrated a fourth time, his heart skipped a beat.Hope beginning to bloom. This is what he’d been waiting for.

Quickly, he pressed down on the side button. He didn’t want to keep her waiting. She had to know that he was there.

“What the hell is that abomination on your wrist?”Matt called out.

Wade didn’t look up.He was too busy staring at the brushed metal band.Willing it to vibrate again. And when it did, he cracked his first smile of the day.Possibly of the week.

“Jesus Christ, it lights up too!”Jonah guffawed.

“You gonna beam us up, Scotty?”Zach sniggered.

His brothers could give him shit all night. He no longer cared.Riley was out there thinking of him.Which meant only one thing. He had to go.He had somewhere to be.

Pushing up from the desk, he didn’t feel much like saying goodbye.Especially after Matt asked him if he’d got his bracelet out of a happy meal.

Bastard.
