“I know what you’re doing, and I’m okay with it, because I wanted to see the cactuses anyway.”
“Cacti. And no, you didn’t.”
“Then why are they in my search history?” She pulled out her phone and swiped at it. Held it up for him to see.
He squinted at the screen. “You’ve been googling cactuses, and you sat there letting me give you the whole spiel?”
She shrugged and put her phone down. “It’s fun to watch you do your thing.”
Calm down, libido.
“Plus, we do need to get back to Illinois sooner rather than later.” She poked her spoon at him to emphasize her point. “No more detours after this. I wasn’t messing around about that part.”
“Why are you the way you are?”
“I dunno,” she said. “But I think you like it.”
He smiled. Dang it. He did.
CHAPTER 19
SIMONE
Alisha:
Are you seriously driving back?
Alisha:
Answer your phone!
Alisha:
Why did I have to hear from Chantal that you decided to drive back??
Alisha:
Why did I have to hear from Chantal that you’re DRIVING ACROSS THE COUNTRY WITH A STRANGER???
Alisha:
If you get murdered trying to make it back for my bachelorette party, I’ll never forgive myself.
Alisha:
I will NOT be haunted by you, Simone.
Alisha:
Fine, you’re dead. Meg is now de facto maid-of-honor.
Simone pushed the call button, and a few moments later Alisha’s laugh rattled against her eardrums. “She lives!”
“Shut up. I thought you were worried.” Simone leaned back against the car, taking in the panoramic view of red canyon walls and green foliage. They’d pulled off at a roadside park, and she had to admit, the scenery was drop-dead gorgeous.
Maybe a poor choice of words, considering she was in the desert with a man she didn’t know all that well ... a man currently snapping close-ups of a chipmunk perched on a boulder. She really wasn’t too concerned.
“Oh, I was worried. Very much so.” Her sister’s chuckle belied her words. “But let’s be real. You’re pretty much a gremlin: hard to kill and feisty as heck. I had faith in your ability to stay alive.”
