“Lorna,” Marc stood before her desk, and had to call her name several times before she looked up.

“Shit, I mean monk, you scared me, Marc. Why didn’t you say anything?”

“I’ve been calling your name for the last five minutes. It’s your turn to go see Maggie.”

“Oh,” Lorna looked at her watch, then grabbed a pad of paper and a pen. She waved and said she’d be back in a jiffy. She didn’t see Marc shake his head after her, with a look of longing on his face.

Chapter 3

Lorna reached up and knocked on Finn’s door, and grinned when Major opened it. She scratched behind his ears, and asked if his owner was available. He woofed, then stepped back to allow Lorna and Marc to enter. After getting the approval from Finn, he shut the door. They all settled in and Lorna started the conversation.

“I’ll go first. After talking it over with Maggie, and then with Marc, I’d like to take Janis’ job.”

“Are you okay with that?” Finn asked Marc.

“Absolutely. As much as I enjoyed my previous job, I have to be honest here, I don’t like making all the phone calls, and going to the people and begging for donations. I don’t think I’m as good a people person as Lorna is. The opportunity to stay behind the scenes, but still do good work appeals to me. So, yes, I’m okay with Lorna taking Janis’ position. I’ve coveted Maggie’s for some time now.”

“Good, that was exactly how I would have placed you, had the decision been up to me. I don’t want to put someone in a position that they would come to resent. I agree with both of you. Marc, you’re a great behind-the-scenes guy, while Lorna is a great up-front person. Do either of you have any questions?”

“What all does Janis’ job entail?” Lorna asked. “I have a good grasp on it, but not everything.”

“What you’ve been doing for the last year. You’ve been doing what Janis was supposed to do when she worked here, not pawning it off onto you. The only thing different will be that you will move into an office, and your desk will be filled by an assistant. I haven’t hired anyone for that job yet.”

“Which office?”

“You can pick between Simon’s or Janis’. Simon will not be replaced. As a matter of fact, youarehis replacement.”

“I don’t understand.”

“It turned out that your two predecessors were lazy and divided their jobs in two. You’ve been doing both their work since I fired Janis. Marc’s been helping you with the overflow, but in reality, it’s all been you.” Finn looked over at the man, and sighed. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to sound like you didn’t carry any weight in doing your job.”

“Don’t worry about it. I understood what you meant. I did the background work, while Lorna did the in-your-face stuff.”

“Exactly.” Finn nodded. “Now, I have a meeting to get to that I forgot about. If I don’t make it, I think the wedding might be called off.”

Lorna laughed. “Ronnie wouldn’t do that. Tell her I said hi.”

“I will.” Finn stood and lifted two envelopes. After handing them to each person before him, he nodded. “That is your raise. The number on the paper inside reflects your annual salary. If you don’t agree, we can negotiate on Monday.” The three of them walked out, and Lorna gripped her envelope tightly, then walked directly to the ladies’ room. After making sure she was the only one inside, she ripped it open and gasped at the number staring back at her. She whipped open the door and yelled,“FINN!”and rushed down the hall toward him.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing, but when does this start?” She held up the torn envelope. “When do we start our new positions?”

“Monday. Take the rest of the day and the weekend off. Celebrate, you both deserve it. But, come Monday morning, you’ll need to buckle down and get to work. It’s my understanding we have three large fundraisers over the summer.”

“We do.” Lorna nodded and stepped back. “Tell Ronnie I said hi, and that we’ll get together soon.”

“I will.” Finn stepped into the elevator and was gone in seconds.

Walking on air, Lorna went back to her desk. She stuffed the envelope in her purse, and looked at Marc, who had stuffed something in his briefcase. They only grinned at each other.

“Did Finn tell us when these new jobs start?” Marc asked in confusion.

“Monday, I caught him before he got onto the elevator. He said to take the rest of the day and the weekend to regroup, and start Monday morning.”

“Sounds good, but I have some stuff I’d like to finish.”

“Me too,” Lorna admitted as she pulled the folder she’d been working on before her meeting with Finn.
