“Wait!”Alfie called out as they walked down the hall. Everyone turned as one to see what he wanted, and he looked directly at Lucas, as he asked, “What’s the address of the hospital where Wyatt is? We’ll go there to be with Morgan.”
Lucas looked at his father, and a nurse walking by overheard them and gave them directions. “We’ll be there,” Alfie said as he grabbed June’s hand, twirled around, and hustled down the hall, with the others closely on his heels.
Bernie looked at the J’s in confusion, and Josh gave her a small smile, “We’re all close, but Alfie is the closest with Morgan. He is her favorite.”
“Oh.” Bernie nodded and turned to continue down the hall, but Lucas stopped them.
“Before we go in, Dad, I have to tell you what I did, then what Carl and I did.”
“Okay,” Dillon said, but lifted his head and looked down his nose at his son. “Is it bad?”
“I don’t think so.”
“What did you do?”
“When we realized someone was shooting at us, Carl made me take cover behind one of our ATVs. He took cover behind the other one. I had my .30-06 with me, but I never fired a bullet. We took on fire, but Carl shot back, when we heard a shout, he made me stay put while he went to investigate. He came back with a suspect. Carl had shot him in the arm. Anyway, we didn’t have any handcuffs or anything, but I used the guy’s shoelaces like Aunt Morgan told me to do if I needed to restrain someone.”
“Okay, but what does that have with you doing anything? I don’t understand what you’re trying to say here, Lucas.”
“Oh, I made the executive decision and fired the guy.”
“He’s an employee?” Dillon demanded. “Who?”
“Randy Weis. Don’t worry, after I fired him, Carl confirmed his name was what I called him, then he pulled his badge and placed him under arrest.”
“On what charges?” Bernie demanded.
“Attempted murder of a federal officer.”
“Good, were you able to question him?”
“Yes, after Carl read him his rights, he had me record the entire interview. I uploaded it to the cloud so Astrid would have a copy of it. That was all Carl’s idea, he didn’t want the guy to come back and accuse him of brutality or something.”
“Thank you for telling me this, Lucas. You did good, I’m proud of you. The ladies were able to capture three men that were shooting at Morg and Wy, but I don’t know who they are, and when we questioned them, they were tightlipped in details.”
“Yeah, well, you’re not going to want to hear what Weis had to say. If he gets a good lawyer, he could get off Scott free.”
“Excuse me?” Bernie demanded. “What did he have to say?”
“In a nutshell, he was acting on instructions to get his little sister back. According to him, Pam was kidnapped six days ago, and if Randy wants to see her alive again, he had to kill Uncle Wyatt. He admitted that he had been told there were others trying to do the same thing, but he didn’t know who.”
“What about George and Paulie? Did Randy say anything about them? They haven’t been to work the same as Randy.”
“No clue about them, Randy didn’t say anything.”
“Do they have family?” Alice asked quietly from the side. “I mean if Randy went after Morgan and Wyatt to free his sister, what’s to stop the other two from doing the same, especially if a beloved family member is involved.”
“Shit, I never thought of it like that.” Dillon sighed and rubbed the back of his neck. “Not that I don’t want to go and investigate what Lucas just told us, I think the first thing we need to do is to make sure Chuck and Wyatt are okay. I for one what to check on Chuck, then get over to the other hospital and see if my brother is still alive.”
They all agreed, and Lucas walked further down the hall, only to pause when a door opened and three people walked out. Bernie gave out a little squeak when she found herself shoved up against the wall, and four well-muscled men grabbed the men and brought them to the ground.
“What’s going on?” Bernie said when Astrid and Ava helped her to her feet and made sure she was okay. Before anyone could say anything, two nurses came hurrying up the hall.
“What’s going on here?”
“Call the police,” Dillon said, from his position of having one knee on the side of one man’s head, while he held his arms bent up between his shoulder blades.
“Sir, you can’t harass the patients’ family members.”
