“When you got out, why didn’t you go to medical school?” I asked.

“My priorities had changed. I needed…” His voice faded away. “I wanted different things.”

I wasn’t going to get him to uncover those secrets tonight. Not yet. Maybe not ever. But I hoped someday he’d trust me with even more of his truths.

There was a muffled conversation on his end before he came back. “Jonas has informed me he’s going to waste away to skin and bones if I don’t go feed him.”

A boyish tenor spoke over him. “I simply said I was hungry.”

A chuckle escaped me at the tease Marco had made as well as the response. An insight into Marco that no one but me had been given the privilege of seeing. Finding out about his foster brother had been one of the surprises our daily texts had provided, and this insight into him as an older brother flipped my heart more. Drawing me in. Enticing me.

I finally breathed out, “Have a good night, Marco.”

“You too, Angel.”

And then he hung up before I could really register the nickname. The sweet term of endearment that had slipped from his lips as if he’d said it a million times. My heart stalled and then started again at a clip that had nothing to do with my workout and everything to do with a serious man who was thousands of miles away.
