Since the fae were no doubt still looking for us, we made sure to avoid the main roads and trails. Instead, we stuck to the fields, the forests, and the roads less traveled.
As we walked, I kept my distance from Noxx. I didn’t trust myself around him. I didn’t trust the way he made me feel. We’d only begun this journey together because we were forcedto become allies against the fae. It never should’ve become more than that.
After walking until well after the sun rose over the horizon, Noxx turned around to fire an annoyed glare at me. “What’s your problem? Have I done something to greatly offend you? No more rose petal, okay? How about honeysuckle? Or maybe muffin? Work with me here.”
His efforts to lighten the mood were not lost on me. Clearly, he felt the tension between us too.
“I don’t have a problem,” I insisted, pushing past him as I kept walking.
“Then why are you avoiding me like I have the plague?” He fell into step beside me, having no problem matching my pace.
“I’m not. After everything that’s happened, I think it would be best for us to keep our distance. This wasn’t supposed to become personal.” I avoided his gaze, searching the landscape for a place to set up camp for a while. Until my strength returned, I needed to take more breaks.
Noxx scoffed. “It’s a bit late for that, princess. It became personal long before you came all over my cock. After that, there was no turning back.”
I whirled around to hit him with a disgusted glower. “Why must you talk like that? It’s nasty and vulgar.”
“It is,” he agreed, a sly smirk drifting over his lips. “You like it though, don’t you?”
Heat crept up my neck to my cheeks. I turned away before he saw me blushing. “You’ve lost your mind. We should find a place to stop for a while. I could use something to eat.”
Noxx gave me a brief reprieve by letting me change the subject. He pointed to a small clearing between some trees. A pond filled with lily pads, frogs, and other small wildlife greeted us. It was the perfect place to stay a while.
Everything felt much different in The Seam than it had in the Shadow Realm. Nature here had been untouched by fae magick. The trees were happy to have us among them. I felt their quiet content within me.
I knelt next to the pond, dipping my fingers into the clean water. Splashing a little on my face, I savored the moment. Never did I feel more like myself than when surrounded by nature. Aside from the fae forest of course.
I glanced up to find Noxx watching me. The intensity in his eyes made my stomach twist. He couldn’t hide his desire.
“Don’t look at me like that,” I said, echoing words he’d spoken to me when we were in bed together.
“Why not? Are you not used to having a man want you like this? Enough to kill anyone who dares to hurt you?” Reaching into the bag of supplies, Noxx pulled out a sheet he’d swiped from the bed at the inn. He spread it out on the ground next to the pond.
I rose and turned to face him, wiping my wet hands on my pants. “You know why. When this is all over, we go back to being what we were before. Enemies. I can’t let myself forget that. Let’s not make it harder than it needs to be when that time comes.”
Noxx stormed over to where I stood. Grabbing my arms in his fierce grasp, he kissed me with a wild brutality. A kiss that screamed with passion and want. But more than that, it burned with undeniable possessiveness.
I fell headlong into him. Unable to resist, I slid my arms around his neck, kissing him back with total abandon. Needing to make this moment last forever. Because when it stopped, when the world came rushing back, then I would be faced with the truth again. There was nothing for us beyond our journey here together.
Noxx’s tongue swept the inside of my mouth. He nipped at my bottom lip before sucking at it, hungrily claiming my lips inevery way. A rush of adrenaline and desire filled me, making my insides twist and turn.
When Noxx broke off the kiss, he stared deep into my eyes and said, “Will you be able to forget that, princess? Will you be able to forget the way I felt inside you? What about this?”
His hand drifted down, disappearing inside my pants before sliding between my thighs. I sucked in a breath, unable to speak. Why was he doing this to me? To us? Didn’t he realize how much harder he was making all of this?
He held my chin in his other hand, forcing me to stare deep into his eyes as he slid a finger over my sensitive flesh. Gliding between my folds as he sought the wetness that already gathered for him.
Noxx wasn’t alone in there. In his eyes, I also saw his dragon. The beastly part of him that had been caged for so long. It seemed to know that I was the one who could set it free. I felt it’s silent plea in the back of my mind. I felt the way it wanted me. The way Noxx wanted me in every way.
He continued to stroke me with a finger, teasing my clit with slow, sensual motions. When he pushed his finger inside me, I couldn’t remain silent any longer. A soft moan broke free, bringing an obvious satisfaction to Noxx’s face.
“No matter how this ends, Feryn, you will always remember me.” With those words, Noxx pressed a second finger inside me, kissing me again.
I tightly held onto his upper arms, afraid that if I let go, I would simply collapse. There was no arguing his claim. Even if we went back to what we were before, even if we never saw each other again, I would never forget Noxx Drakoth.
As he thrust both fingers inside me, his thumb went to my clit, and I almost immediately came apart all over his hand. My hips jerked. Spasms of pleasure racked me. I moaned into his mouth.
A sudden need to feel him overtook me. My hands went to his pants, to the laces holding them tied tight. I deftly worked the knot, untying his pants so I could reach inside.
