But sure enough, when I walked out of his suite, he followed after me and then walked beside me down the hall as I stalked toward the elevator. Absently, I noticed that the debris fromearlier – the broken dishes and miniature shampoos – had all magically disappeared.

I almost rolled my eyes. They didn't call it the Diamond Resort for nothing.

When the elevator opened, I stepped inside and felt my temper rise to the surface as Reese followed after me, haunting my steps like a bad dream.

I felt like screaming. But I didn't. Instead, I spoke slowly and clearly through gritted teeth. "You don't need to follow me."

"I'm not."

"Yes, you are."

And then he said it. "Don't flatter yourself."

"Yeah, well fuck you, too."

He had no reaction, but hedidaccompany me all the way out to my car, glaring at anyone who looked at me sideways.Whatever.

The guy was so messed up, it would take a team of shrinks a million years to figurehimout.

But I was done.

Period.

End of story.

Jerk.

Finally, I was in my car, driving away from that stupid resort, leaving all of it behind. Leavinghimbehind.

And that's when the tears came.

Terrific.

Chapter 62

Emily

From inside my car, I stared at the multitude of boxes stacked neatly under the trailer's awning. So that's where all of my stuff went?

I could hardly believe it, but what else could it be?

I watched in stunned disbelief as the movers, two youngish guys in sharp black uniforms, closed the rear doors of the white delivery van and turned to look at Rita.

Yeah, she was there, too.And so was her yellow sportscar, parked haphazardly in Vivian's usual spot. Where Vivian was, I couldn’t say for sure, but if I had to guess, she was probably at the hotel – meaningourhotel, not the Sentry Tower in Chicago.

I kept my eyes trained on Rita as she reached into the side pocket of her black biker's jacket and pulled out a wad of bills. She paid the guys in cash along with generous tips if their broad smiles were any indicator.

Watching all of this unfold, I reached up and rubbed at my eyes – and not only because I'd been crying. All of this was so unreal, I didn't know what to think.

Judging from the quantity of boxes, Reese had returned not only my own personal things, but everything he'd purchased for me as well. In the big scheme of things, those items weren't terribly important, but I was stupidly touched just the same.

Did this make me a sap?

Probably.

I remained inside my car even as the van pulled away, heading toward the front of my parents' property. I twisted in my seat and watched as it disappeared behind my parents' garage and then reappeared a moment later on the road out front, heading toward town.

When the van disappeared for good, I turned once again toward the trailer, only to startle in my seat at the sight of Rita standing just outside my car window. Through the glass, she asked, "You got a beer?"
