Chapter Fifteen
After breakfast, theygot back onto the road.
This part of the journey soon became very boring.Through the northern part of Kansas and across Nebraska, the landscape seemed to be flat, with agriculture as far as the eye could see. When they stopped to fill the gas tank, she gravitated toward the candy aisle and debated what to try. Finally, she grabbed a couple of different candy bars and two sodas she couldn’t decide between, and took all her treasures to the register. She paid with the credit card Jeremiah had given her, hoping he wouldn’t be too mad that she was spending some of his money frivolously.
Scias never allowed her to drink soda or eat sweets. He said his wife had to stay thin, and he had her on a strict diet every day of her life. Now that she was free, she had a lot of flavors to try. When they got back on the road, she happily munched on her purchases.
“You’re going to be bouncing off the ceiling on a sugar high.”
“Maybe,” she agreed, smiling.“I think I like the dark chocolate better than the milk. Not as tooth-decayingly sweet as the other.”
“I thought we’d stop for the night in Des Moines,” Evren told her.
“Okay.Hey, I just remembered, what name did your brother give you?”
“What?”
“On the new IDs Jeremiah gave us.”
“Oh, I already had fake IDs.Kind of a must in the world I live in.”
She waited but he didn’t offer any other information.“Well?”
He grimaced.“My brother really is a dickhead.Like for you, he used my middle name as well.”
“Okay.”When he didn’t tell her, she had to prompt him.“Are you going to tell me?”
“I’d rather not.”
“That embarrassing?”
“Remember, we had shitty parents.”
“What’ll I get if I guess correctly?”
“A round of applause.”
She smirked.“Elmo?”
“What?Uh, no.Thank fuck.”
