“It does to me.”
“Argh. You’re so frustrating, you know that?”
“Been told a time or two. Now stop deflecting.”
“I’m helping out a friend,” she hedges, her gaze finding the floor.
“What aren’t you telling me?”
“My friend’s Dom,” she growls, using air quotes, and I feel the hostility coming off her. “He said if she didn’t quit her job, he’d make her life a living hell.”
“What does that have to do with you, and how are you helping her out?”
She rakes a hand through her wavy hair and falls down into her seat ungracefully.
“She needs to keep the job, but she can’t when she’s trying to escape his clutches. Once she’s ditched his ass, she’ll go back to working. I’m only covering for her in the meantime.”
I ponder over what she’s revealed, my mind wondering if this douchebag needs someone to rough him up or not. I move around the dresser, so she has to look at me.
“Is she safe?”
Starr hesitates. “I…I don’t really know.”
“When you find out, let me know. Until then, get your sexy ass over here; we have a routine to perfect.”
She gets up and walks with me, her tight tank and shorts hugging her figure while her sight is set on Kenzi.
“Why is Justyce’s girl here?”
“To drive him wild.”
“Huh?”
“She’s going to dance tonight, and he doesn’t know.”
“She can dance?”
“Fuck yes, she can. That girl can move like no other.”
We reach the mirrors lined up against the back, and I catch Starr's face fall, her eyes darting away from Kenzi. My mind runs away, and I’m left wondering what the hell made her change, which is probably ignorant of me when I think of it.
We set up our section, grab some bottles of water and begin practicing. After a few hours of dancing, I’m confident our moves are in sync and the choreography is perfect. Kenzi will come in halfway through the act, causing me and Starr to move aside and allow her to take center stage. We will still be dancing, but all eyes will be on the bombshell in the middle, especially Justyce’s.
I move to the fridge to grab another bottle of water, then lean up against the lilac-colored wall, watching Kenzi spin around, jump up, and then land in the splits. My brows rise, and a smirk lifts my lips.
Justyce is going to lose his damn mind. Taking a sip, I find Starr, seeing her gaze downcast and her fingers moving frantically across her phone.
I frown, pushing off the wall, and walk over to her to find her texting away.
“Everything ok?”
“Fuckin’ hell, Raine! Do you have to sneak up on me like that?”
“I didn’t. Why are you so jumpy?”
“I’m not. Just drop it, ok. Please.”
I nod, relenting. “You know where I am if you need me.”
