“You’ve always been a mama’s boy, and this will be the first time you haven’t lived in Toledo. She’s used to you being around.”

Emmet attended Howard University and remained in DC for several years after earning his master’s degree. He moved home after getting married and having his first child about eight years ago. His wife, Aliana, wasn’t close to her family, so he thought it made sense to move closer to ours because he traveled a lot for work, and my parents could help with my nieces when needed.

“When are you moving?” Dutton asked.

“I gotta be outta the house a week from today, and I start work in two weeks.”

“That’s not a long timeline,” Dutton replied.

“It’s not, but remember, I’ve been sleeping on an air mattress for the past two months, and most of my large pieces of furniture were ruined. I’m pretty much starting from scratch.”

“True,” the three of them said.

“My issue is finding somewhere to live in Chicago. The closer you are to downtown, the more expensive it is. If you don’t know shit about the city, you could end up in the hood.”

“Can the company help you with that?” Javon asked.

“They offered, but I declined.”

“Why the fuck would you do that?” Emmet questioned.

Although Karla had been on my mind nonstop, I hadn’t told anyone about her. Once I shared the story, my boys would think she was the reason I’d decided to move to Chicago, and they wouldn’t be wrong.

“I met a woman in Punta Cana,” I began.

“Aww, shit!”

“Oh, hell nah!”

“In Punta Cana?”

“Damn! Let me finish,” I barked.

“Go ’head, man,” Javon urged.

“I met a woman in Punta Cana, and after we hooked up, she ghosted me. She happens to live in Chicago.”

“In other words, you’re chasing pussy,” Dutton commented.

“That shit must be good as fuck!” Javon added.

“Aye, y’all chill on my lady before I fuck y’all up,” I warned before giving them more details.

Thankfully, they let me talk with no more interruptions or side comments. When I finished, they had a better understanding, but still talked shit.

“The job sounds promising, and with this shit going on with Raven, starting somewhere new is probably a good move. As nice as Karla sounds, she has some baggage,” Emmet said.

“Two kids and an ex-husband? Ain’t no way I’m dealing with that, especially since I’m child free,” Javon said.

“Everybody has their share of baggage. Hell, with the shit I got going on, I’m the last person to judge,” I told them.

“She must be something special, Bruh. I hope it works out. If her ex is on some bullshit, we’re just a phone call and a few hours away,” my brother offered.

“I’m not worried about that nigga. They seem to co-parent well, but she don’t fuck with him concerning shit but their daughters.”

“That’s what all baby mamas say,” Javon said.

“She’s an ex-wife, not a baby mama, and she divorced him because he cheated. I already told you to chill.”
