“You know what this is, baby, but you have to let me go so I can do my thing.”
I released him and took a step back as he got on one knee.
“You weren’t looking for love, but love found you anyway. I didn’t believe in love at first sight until I saw you. The first time I looked in your eyes, I saw our future together. You threw me for a loop when you ghosted me, but I knew that fate, the universe, and God would conspire to bring us back to each other. I love you, Karla. I’m so in love with you, baby. I want to spend the rest of my life loving you the way you deserve to be loved. Karla Gisele Newsome, will you make me the happiest man in the world and be my wife?”
“He loves you, Mommy!”
“Say yes, Mommy!”
“Yes, Elias. I would love to be your wife.”
One Year Later
Karla’s Epilogue
The time in my life when I was happier than I was at this moment was the first time I looked into each of my children’s eyes. Things with my first husband didn’t work out, but I’d never regret the time I spent with him because he gave me my girls.
Speaking of Cairo . . . he’d spiraled out of control the moment he found out Elias and I were engaged, and I was pregnant. He was so pissed, he began to disregard our custody arrangement and stopped getting the girls on his scheduled dates. He’d often use traveling for work as an excuse, but I later found out in court that his job didn’t require him to travel.
I never pressed him when he canceled because the last thing I would do was force him to spend time with his children. I always wanted my babies with me, but it wasn’t about me. When the girls began to question why their father stopped picking them up, I had to take action.
Cairo showed his entire ass in court. After my attorney laid out all the facts, including the cameras he placed in my bushes, the judge was livid. Instead of us having shared custody, I ended up with primary custody. He got them every other weekend and was required to pay child support. I didn’t want that because the girls loved their father as much as they loved me, but I couldn’t allow him to keep disappointing them.
Everything was settled about six months ago, and the girls adjusted well. They still missed seeing their father more often, and on the off chance he asked to see them, I never denied him. Unfortunately, he didn’t do that very often.
Thankfully, the void Cairo left with his inconsistency, Elias filled tenfold. His goal wasn’t to replace their father, but he had no problem filling the gap. He loved the girls as if they were his, and I couldn’t ask for a better bonus parent for them.
“I think your son is hungry,” Elias said as he entered the family room.
“Why is he onlymyson?”
“Because when it’s time to eat, he don’t care about nobody but you. I can’t wait to have them titties back.”
He placed Elias Jr. in my arms, and he damn near attacked me.
“Hold on, EJ. Let me get—my goodness, boy. You’re ridiculous.”
My son barely let me adjust my shirt to give him access to my breast before he started pulling and grabbing. He was strong for a six-month-old.
“Yeah. His little ass needs to be cut off,” Elias griped.
“I can’t believe you’re jealous of your son. You should be ashamed of yourself.”
He shrugged. “Well, I’m not. Look at how happy he looks. If I had your titty in my mouth, I’d be happy too. I don’t blame you, Son, but you might have to start sharing with Daddy.”
“Oh my God. Go find you some business while I put him to sleep. I’ll come take care of your spoiled ass when I’m done.”
“That’s what I’m talking about. You see that EJ? She was my wife before she was yo’ mama. You can’t have her all to yourself all the time.”
As if he understood what his father had said, he covered the side of his face with his little hand and gave his father the middle finger.
“Oh!” I gasped.
“I know damn well he didn’t?—”
“And did. My son said what he said. Now leave us alone.”
Elias walked away, mumbling, “I would go to the ends of the earth for that lil nigga, and this is how he do me. He’s lucky I love him more than life, or he’d have to go. I can’t wait until the girls get home so I can tell them how their brother played me.”
