“Everyone thinks their family is weird. I don’t care. I wanna see your bedroom.” He grinned wickedly, and I quickly tried to scan my memory for its state, desperately trying to remember if anything was embarrassing in it. Finally, I sighed as he continued to gaze at me, making me squirm.

“Fine, but I have warned you.”

He pulled the keys out, and we made our way up to my house, pushing open the door. Thankfully the house was silent, and I closed the door behind us, feeling incredibly self-conscious. I saw the house through his eyes and noticed how much smaller than his it was, and I quickly scanned the rooms to see where my family was. I turned to face him as he stood in the doorway, watching me with intrigue.

“You’re nervous,” he stated.

“Of course I am.”

“Don’t be. Where’s your room then?” he asked softly as his eyes met mine.

“Let’s just get one thing straight—” I began, and he held his finger to my lips.

“No sex, no funny business. I know. That’s not what I meant. I want to see your room because it’syours.”

I smiled and pushed past him, making my way up the stairs as he followed behind me. We reached the top just as Elijah’s door opened, and out walked a familiar figure. My mouth fell open in shock as my eyes darted to Bailey, who raised his eyebrows in surprise.

“Ray?!”

Ray blinked rapidly when my brother opened the door behind her, his eyes running over Bailey with interest.

“Hey, I’m Elijah.”

He leaned around Ray to shake Bailey’s hand, who nodded respectfully.

“I’m Bailey. Good to meet you.”

Elijah stood back and looked at me as I stared at Ray.

“I have to go. I’ll call you,” Ray muttered as she pushed past us, racing down the stairs. I turned to Bailey and pointed in the direction of my room.

“I’m sorry, I just want to see her; go to my room if you want?”

He nodded, and he glanced over to my room. “It’s cool; I’ll wait for you.”

I ran down the stairs after Ray, flinging open the door to see her hurrying away from me down the sidewalk.

“Ray, wait!” I called, and she froze, slowly turning to see me running towards her. I stood in front of her gasping for breath as she bit her lip.

“I’m sorry, you weren’t supposed to find out like that,” she whispered, and I looked up at her.

“No shit, was I meant to find out at all?” I exclaimed as she cast her eyes towards the sky.

“That’s the first time.”

“So what, you like sleeping with older brothers of your schoolmates?” I demanded as she crossed her arms and glared at me.

“If you weren’t so wrapped up withhim, you might have noticed I never actually slept with Reuben. I couldn’t do it. I’m in love with someone else.”

She breathed, her eyes filling with tears.

“Ray, come back into the house.”

A quiet voice came from behind me, and I whirled to see Elijah standing with his hands jammed into his pockets as he gazed past me to Ray. I stepped backward as her eyes met his, and he walked towards her slowly, wrapping her into his arms as he kissed the top of her head.
