“I am happy to help.”
“What’s going to happen to these other horses?”
“I’ll return them to their families if possible, but it may be a while. We will evacuate their families when the protectors arrive so this Driscoll can’t traffic them.”
“Then you’re going after Driscoll?”
“Yes, soon. We need to find out who’s over Driscoll. Stalker and I think it’s the Mesaarkan, especially all the alien tech Stalker’s team found in Los Angeles.”
“You think an alien is here on Earth?”
“I do. Before Commander Dark came back, the Federation fleet was stretched pretty thin. It would have been easy for them to land here without anyone knowing. If Mesaarkans are here, they can’t mingle without calling attention to themselves. They are reptilian with scales and tails.”
Chapter Six
“You mean like lizards?” Falyn asked, wrinkling her nose.
Max nodded. “I think that is an apt description. Their faces are flatter and more human-like, but you would never mistake one for a human.”
“What if they are here? What then?”
“Our treaty says we can only expel them from Earth. We can’t ship them to the prison planet.”
“Why would they want to come here after they’ve all but destroyed Earth?”
“Human trafficking is very lucrative. Apparently, some Mesaarkans have human fetishes.”
“Fetishes?”
“They are obsessed with tormenting and copulating with human females.”
“Oh,” she responded, blushing. “My education is limited. Deviant behavior was not a subject I studied.”
“I can help with your education… Not about deviant behavior….” He grinned. “I have com-tablets to give out to people in my territory. You can get on the AI net as well as communicate with anyone on the planet who has one.
Max stopped at his vehicle and opened the cargo compartment. The device he took out was about four inches square and unfolded into a few different configurations.
“That would be wonderful!” Falyn smiled up at him as he showed it to her. “I worry sometimes living up here alone with no neighbors. If I had an accident and needed help, I could be long dead before anyone found me.”
“You won’t need to worry any longer. You will have this.” He handed it to her, “and me.”
“Even if I don’t become your mate?”
The hurt look that flashed in his eyes made Falyn regret taunting him, especially after he had been so nice fixing Angus’s leg after she shot him.
And more so when he said, “even then.”
Falyn stopped and turned to him, resting a hand on his upper arm. “I’m not saying I won’t….” She paused, shaking her head. “I was teasing. I’m sorry. It wasn’t funny.” As she stroked his arm, his expression softened. “I like you and think you might be a good mate. I just want to get better acquainted before we take the next step.”
“For me, it’s you or no one.” Max framed her face in his hands and then smoothed her hair, nodding. “I understand it’s different for you. I was programmed to become your mate and make a family with you. But you didn’t know anything about me until yesterday.” He rested his hands on her shoulders and held her gaze.
Falyn liked the warmth in his blue eyes. “Do cyborgs eat?”
“Yes, we do. We can go long periods without nourishment, but we like to eat regularly.
“Good, I will make us some breakfast. I just need to stop at the henhouse and collect a few eggs. I’ll probably have to fire up the cook stove. The coals have probably burnt out as I’ve been gone so long.”
“That sounds nice.” The corners of his lips lifted briefly, and his eyes sparked with appreciation. It didn’t hurt that he was one of the most gorgeous men she had ever seen. Everything about him was alluring, and he smelled so good.
