That realisation is freeing.
Somewhere inside me, a little part of me that wasn’t one hundred percent on board with all of this settles, accepting what’s being offered. The monsters wear any skin they want. They can look ferocious with tentacles and razor-sharp teeth or like men in white boxers with blue stripes.
But I finally understand my purpose.
It’s my job to hunt them down.
And punish them.
Chapter 27
Stix
Isit opposite her, reach out, and take her hands in mine. They are so soft and warm. I don’t know that I’ve felt anything like this until her.
I never want to let go of her.
“Poppet.”
She lifts eyes full of shadows and pain. “We were always together. He was family. My best friend, my brother. I don’t know who I am without him.”
“You’re my Becky, strong, capable. You are a cop, and a hunter, a beautiful, alluring woman that I am getting very strong feelings for.”
“Is that enough?” she asks in a whisper. “Don’t you need an omega?”
“No, sweet Becky. No, I would give up a million omegas for one day with you. Any price is worth paying for that perfect day.”
She curls her fingers into her palms and leans towards me.
“You can’t say things like that.”
“I mean it, though. Any price.”
It occurs to me that Becky might be as lost in this world as we are. Perhaps we can all find our way together.
She closes her eyes; her lashes fanning down on her cheek, I catch the hint of liquid and watch in awe as a perfectly clear and shimmering teardrop runs down her cheek.
Without thinking, I lean forward and press my lips to it, flicking my tongue out to taste it.
She lets out a tiny moan and pulls her hands free. We stand together, but she curls her arms around my neck, pulling her body flush against me.
She kisses my neck, then buries her face there. I look at the others.
Frost, Wilder, and Puppy watch me with varying degrees of envy.
“Shall we go home, poppet? Are you ready?”
There’s a lot I don’t say. Are you ready for us, because she might not understand it yet, but, for us, this mating is it.
I’m not looking at anyone else.
If there’s another omega out there that’s meant for us, they’re not. It’s that simple.
“Yes. I’m ready to go home now.”
Packing up our belongings takes a while. We have so much more stuff than we came here with.
“Can we make a stop first?” she asks suddenly.
