Warmth pooled low in my belly, and my clit throbbed from the image his words created. It should bother me he threatened to use sex to save me from myself, but it didn’t. I wasn’t. Instead, I fantasized about it and had an inkling that he maybe had some control over the fantasy too. And I grew wet, needing to clench my thighs to stop the throbbing.
Rune’s eyes darkened, and his nostrils flared as heat surged through him. I felt his need to bury himself deep inside me and fuck me until I was close to coming. Just so he could feel my arousal drip down his length to his balls. He’d keep me on the edge of my orgasm but wouldn’t give it to me because he knew it’d keep me here with him and not spiraling into the past.
“Fuck,” I moaned, barely a whisper.
He curled his lips into a feral smile full of promises of what he had planned for me. He flicked his eyes down to my lips and back up to meet my gaze. As he leaned in to close the small space between our mouths, there was a loud crash.
Rune tensed and straightened as he glanced over his shoulder to where the source of the noise came from. My heart stopped for a second before it doubled in pace. I couldn’t see what made the commotion, but didn’t wonder for long.
“Sorry,” Slátra called awkwardly. He didn’t say what crashed, and from the sound of it, I couldn’t take a guess. But the mood was ruined. Not that we had time for Rune and me to run off somewhere private to finish what we started. Knowing him, he’d drag me into an empty stall and fuck me there, not caring about the others listening. Though I had a gut feeling that he enjoyed having others hear him fuck me.
I took a small step back and peeled my eyes from Rune as he glanced back at me. My mare watched me with her dark eyes full of wariness. I didn’t have to be connected to her mind like Rune’s to know her thoughts. Something deep inside me reached out to her in an invisible bond, and I knew. It was the same one I used to see her memories that made me spiral until Rune dragged me back.
“Hi,” I whispered to her as I brushed past Rune. I rubbed along her muzzle, then up between her ears. “I’m so sorry for coming back late.”
She bumped her muzzle against me with a sigh, and I knew all was forgiven. This time around, she let Rune help me get her ready for our travels. And while the others got their horses ready, I found food and water for her.
“So what are we doing now?” Harper asked as she parted from the others, who seemed to have an issue with her not being within reach of them. But somehow, she managed to get away, and I was glad.
“We’re traveling to find the others. They might need our help,” Rune answered as he worked on my horse.
I nibbled my bottom lip as I watched his hands zoning in on his veins. He worked fast, and I knew the others were rushing too because it wasn’t safe here. If Hegnan and Rekja left a message that they had people following them, then there was no way someone wasn’t watching us. But if someone were, I’d feel it.
Right?
“They’re not okay with taking women from their world, are they?” Harper asked in a teasing tone, but I knew from her strained look she wasn’t.
Rune huffed a laugh and glanced at her with a gentle look. He turned to the men who were watching her with pensive eyes. Rune turned back to us and shrugged with a guilty smile.
She sighed and crossed her arms over her chest. “So is that it? We’re meeting up with some buddies and laying low?”
That caught Rune’s attention. His hands stopped moving on the bridle as he turned his head to her again. He drew his eyebrows together as he studied her.
“How much did they tell you?”
She opened her mouth and raised her eyebrows as she shot him a look before she turned her gaze to me.
Oh god. They didn’t tell her much of anything. Did she know about them being her soulmates? I still wasn’t sure how that worked with splitting the soul like that.
I glanced at Rune, who met my eyes with the same disturbing look I was sure I had. Licking my lower lip, I turned back to Harper and decided to fill her in on what happened to me. I wasn’t sure about telling her about the whole guys-being-her-mate thing, so I didn’t. Which ate at me.
While I told her everything that happened to me, I left out the part of me dying because I didn’t want to burden her with that. I didn’t want to see her eyes fill with sympathy and put her in a spot where she felt she had to comfort me. She was a good friend with an amazing dream of being a doctor, and she’d been working hard toward achieving it. And, of course, she had a good heart, but I didn’t want her to worry because of the tiny detail of my death.
Not when she was dealing with new realms and people. Especially with men who were territorial over her and wouldn’t give her space to breathe.
So I comforted her. Told her it’d be okay, and we’d be okay.
I prayed to whoever listened to keep her safe and keep me from losing another friend.
ChapterTwenty
We set out as we rode to our next destination. Wherever it was. I didn’t know where we were going to search for Hegnan and Rekja, but it seemed like the others had an idea because of how they talked about directions to take and where to avoid, so we weren’t surrounded by people who could attack us. At this point, though, we stuck out like a pink elephant in the room with a bullseye on the forehead.
During the short time we rode, I rocked with the gait of my mare and zoned out while the men talked softly about plans. Harper didn’t follow their conversation either, and I tried chatting with her, but my eyes kept straying to the woods that lined on one side of us. On our other were high walls made from large stones that established a protective barrier from outsiders. Which was now useless considering what happened.
The scenery reminded me of old renaissance movies with towering castles and small towns made with from same type of rocks for their borders. It was pretty but not enough to hold my attention at the moment.
My gut yelled at me to take the path through the woods. I found myself glancing at the darkened trees that screamedcreepy. It didn’t help that the forest had wisps of fog like any scary movie would.
