I struggled to swallow a bite of food that I couldn’t taste. It had a hard time going down, and my hands trembled with nerves. I tucked them in my lap to hide from her view. “What do you mean?”

Did everyone know about our relationship? It couldn’t have been that hard to piece together that we had something romantic happening between us. I’d been ignorant about what others saw and thought.

An image of Dimitri chasing off two lawyers from the break room popped into my head. In one heartbeat, Dimitri stood between me and the two men, and in the next, he caged me in with his arms and swiped a tear away from my cheek. Remembering that moment brought butterflies into my stomach. I was upset with him, but he still made me melt for him.

Mia smiled and tucked a lock of hair behind her ear. “It’s hard to miss how you two behave around each other. He’s...protective of you. From what I’ve seen, you have hearts in your eyes while around him. Even now, while we talk about him, the love shines on your face.” She giggled and scooped some food onto her fork. “After the car accident, I heard he refused to leave your side at the hospital. He took that time off from work, and the firm’s partner had to step in and oversee everything.”

I leaned forward and soaked up everything she said about Dimitri. He hadn’t left my side? That explained why I heard him when I woke up from my coma. It also explained why he hadn’t left after I told him I didn’t know who he was. This whole time, Dimitri had devoted himself to me.

Until Mia.

My stomach churned until I felt I would get sick. I set my fork on the table, too upset to eat. “Mia,” I whispered, and looked her directly in the eye. “What were you really wanting to talk about?”

Her happy-go-lucky look disappeared as shadows crossed her face. She set her fork on her plate and leaned back in her seat. Her hands touched her stomach, and my gaze homed in on the protective touch. This time, I couldn’t come up with any other reason why she would do that if she wasn’t pregnant.

“Please just tell me,” I begged.

Mia took a deep breath; her chest puffed out, and her shoulders rose. She released the breath and said, “I’m pregnant with his baby.”

My world came crashing down on me. Everything around us disappeared until it was just me sitting at the diner’s table, unable to breathe.

I’m pregnant with his baby.

He slept with her.

I’m pregnant with his baby.

Dimitri went behind my back and fucked another woman.

I’m pregnant with his baby.

“Oh,” I whispered.

“I’m so sorry, Emma. We had a few drinks a couple of weeks ago, and one thing led to another. He promised me no one would find out. Thatyouwouldn’t find out. I believed him.” Mia shifted in her seat and glanced away from me. Tears welled in her eyes and transformed the bright blue into ice caps in the Atlantic Ocean. “He wants me to abort the baby, but I can’t. I just want him to be a part of our child’s life. I don’t mind if you want to be a part of our baby’s life, too. You can be the godmother if you’d like.”

Everything felt like it had drawn away, and I was in a long, dark hallway, watching everything from afar. It became difficult to hear anything Mia said.

She wanted me to be a part of the baby’s life? How could she say that to me? It was hard enough hearing her talk about Dimitri’s child that she carried, so how could I possibly be around their kid without breaking down every time? I was in love with Dimitri and thought that if anyone were to carry his child, it would have been me.

“I don’t know what to say,” I mumbled.

“You don’t have to say anything. Just think about it. All I ask is that you talk to Mr. Volkov and convince him he can’t walk away from our baby and me. He didn’t take the news well.”

I could see him being unhappy about it. That was probably why he’d been upset when he returned to his office after talking to her.

“I think I’m ready to go back to the office now,” I said, emotion thick in my voice.

Mia nodded and pulled out her wallet. She grabbed a few twenties and set them down on the table. “Okay, let’s go, then.”

I got out of my seat and followed her out of the diner. My gaze was on her back, but I wasn’t seeing her. I could only see Dimitri having a life with Mia without me in the picture. The cold and snow outside didn’t bother me as it assaulted my senses. I glanced in the law firm’s direction. It wasn’t within a reasonable walking distance, but I considered walking anyway so I wouldn’t be confined in a car with Mia.

I ended up getting in her vehicle anyway and rode with her back to the law firm. I stayed silent, thinking of everything I wanted to tell Dimitri and what I should do.Should I leave him and allow him to start a relationship with Mia so their baby won’t be without a father? Or should I stay with him and watch him be a father to another woman’s child?

I knew my answer, and it pained me.

Ilooked up from my laptop as Emma entered the office and gently shut the door behind her. She ducked her head, crossed the room to the leather sofa, and sat on it. I narrowed my eyes as she took out her computer and set it on her knees. Her usual sweet scent had soured like a rotting fruit left in the sun for too long.

Emma’s shoulders hiked higher, nearly touching her ears. After we’d been separated for an extended period, she’d usually greet me with a smile and a kiss. Though that happened more before she lost her memories, she kept her friendly attitude even after the accident. Now, she didn’t even look at me.
