They had protected me exactly as they had been paid to do. The only thing I could take away from the experience was losing out on the opportunity to get to know Flex inside and out.

The phantom presence of his shaft could still be felt in my fist.

"I apologize for being blunt, but what exactly you were doing before the attack? I know this might seem like an invasion of your privacy, but it can't be helped. Rest assured whatever you say isn't going to get back to Detective Coleman. I have taken it upon myself to be the liaison," Capt. Jacobs said with a hand gently touching my knee.

We both had political visions and ran in the same circle of friends from time to time. He looked out for me but never interfered in my business. It was a mutually beneficial arrangement born from necessity.

"I was having a meeting with my head of security. You can see how the door came off the hinges. It takes a lot of force for that to happen. He must've been hyped up on that new drug I've heard about going around. This is one of the things I'm fighting against in my campaign. The war on drugs is a battle we will win with diligence and law enforcement." I stated a revised version of my campaign slogan.

"We are not on the campaign trail at the moment. I'm just trying to get a bigger picture of what happened. Nobody seems to know how he got into the building without being seen. We've gone over the entire place. There is no forced entry. There's no sign of him. We'll have a police presence outside the building," Capt. Jacobs informed me without first consulting me.

It was a pet peeve of mine. The one thing I didn't need was police officers looking over my shoulder.

"I have my own personal security. One is in the hospital but recovering nicely. Another one was questioned by Detective Coleman. He's reviewing the video as we speak. Anything we find will be turned over to the authorities posthaste," I advised still a little shaken, with my hands pressed against my legs.

"I don't want to hear any arguments. We might not have the necessary manpower, but I can pull one squad car. Let me do this for you. We don't have to like each other to work together. The public needs to know this was an isolated incident," Capt. Jacobs stated.

"I'm sure it was just somebody looking for his next fix. We have to do something about that drug. I'm getting reports of standing room only in the emergency rooms around the city. It's only in Los Angeles, but it could easily spread when word gets out about how strong it is and what kind of effect it has on the human body," I said with my eyes staring into cold and calculating pupils.

"Did you get a look at your attacker? Has there been any death threats? Can you think of anybody that holds a grudge against you?" Capt. Jacobs continued his line of questioning.

"He was wearing a mask. Every politician worth their salt gets death threats. We don't take them seriously unless it goes beyond words and letters. I only hire volunteers. Jack is the only full-time employee other than my security. Let me tell you, they proved their worth today. I'm definitely not paying them enough," I stated the obvious.

"Do you think this has something to do with Detective Coleman? He does have the uncanny ability to make enemies. You were romantically involved for a short time." Capt. Jacobs tossed out an idea to see if it would stick.

I pursed my lips together in silent contemplation. "I doubt it. It was public knowledge when I broke things off with the detective. We haven't seen each other in months. It would make no sense to come after me to get to him. You're barking up the wrong tree as my grandmother used to say."

He fake-laughed but I appreciated the effort. "That's what I thought but I wanted to make sure. I hope you understand my candor. The drug situation is being handled. We should be making the necessary arrests soon. There is no timeline. We are putting the pieces together during a lengthy investigation."

"I've heard stories and I wonder how many have been embellished over the years. Why did you settle for a desk job? If you don't mind me asking a personal question," I queried.

"I was shot on duty. I don't have the same mobility as I did in my early years. I still want to make a difference, but I can't do that in the field very often. You can't know from looking, but this knee is a composite steel alloy," he said with his knuckle hitting his knee.

He put his black notebook back into his pocket with an elastic band to keep him from losing his place. He walked out without any further comments. Everything was being done that had to be done.

Flex came in but he didn't look very happy. "I've combed the archives, but he must've known where the cameras were. The only time we see him is in the hallway. Nobody questioned him or tried to stop him. We have to make them mindful. Send out a blanket email to all the volunteers. We are only three people. The more eyes watching the better," he proposed, using the human component.

"I like the way you think," I said with a wink.

I typed furiously on my keyboard, trying to find the right words to convey the seriousness of what had just happened. He made a few comments while looking over my shoulder and massaging the tendons of my tense neck.

The stress washed off of me while he continued to press his thumbs into my shoulder blades. He was very good and could have been a masseuse in a past life. He knew which buttons to press to turn things from platonic to physically exciting in a matter of seconds.

"I never did get to finish what I started. I'm sorry for torturing you like that. I don't know what came over me." I apologized for having fun at his expense.

"Don't ever apologize. I would've told you if you were doing something I didn't like. We don't need a safe word. We feel things differently than others when we are in each other's arms. I still have this slight tingling sensation. Lean back a little," he instructed with his thumbs going deeper than they already were.

I started to breathe heavily with my muscles flexing. It was an all-over body experience. He knew exactly what he was doing to get a rise out of me.

"I think we should save this for another time. We have to be careful.." I referred to her family friendly image..

He took his hands off of me and I instantly regretted saying anything.

"There's no time like the present. Follow me and try to keep a straight face. We can get ahead of this before they put two and two together." He snickered when he threw my words back against me.

He must have been listening at the door.
