It smelled delicious.
I took a few tentative steps. The man didn't have a chance to defend himself. His gun was still in the holster. The hand attached to it hung limply from a tree.
I wanted to believe the pain was fleeting. I knew from the sound of it that it wasn't.
He had dedicated his life to protecting others. His death would echo through the community. His epitaph would read served with distinction and honor until the very end.
I didn't know who was going to break the news to Sarah. Would she be relieved or saddened by the loss?
She didn't want to see me and had summarily cut me out of her life.
The message was clear.
Something bigger than life stood in the shadows. It dared me to approach. It had to be an optical illusion. The size of the shadow illuminated something beyond my understanding.
It stood on two legs yet was hunched over. Its arms and legs were tree trunks. It outweighed the wolf by at least 100 pounds. That was considering its size. There wasn't anything like it. It wasn't a bear.
The pain radiated through my skull. My vision blurred and all four legs collapsed. It could have easily killed us without a second thought, but it didn't.
I blinked and it was gone.
CHAPTER 13
_____
SARAH
Not a single word.
What we had together couldn't have meant very much to him. The news of what happened to Samuel hit me hard. It brought up old forgotten memories, some good and some bad. He obsessed over me when I told him we didn't have a future.
He went out of his way to protect me. He thought he was being sly, but his superior always gave me a heads-up.
Sleeping was the furthest thing from my mind. A few hours of shut-eye would hopefully recharge my batteries. Something nagged at me. Something that I just couldn't seem to grasp.
Samuel had gone out of his way to investigate Flex. Confirmed reports had the house turned upside down, but they didn't find anything pointing to his participation in peddling drugs to kids.
They couldn't find him for further questioning. It wasn't from a lack of trying.
Sleep continued to elude me until I gave up and decided to get a warm cup of milk. The old tradition still held true. My mother turned me on to the concept.
I padded my way into the kitchen barefoot wearing a sheer white nightshirt. The transparency of it wasn't lost on me when the moonlight struck it through the blinds. It was definitely out of my comfort zone but made me feel freely sexual with my desires.
I jumped out of my skin when a hand covered my mouth.
"Please, don't scream. I'm not going to hurt you," he said.
My whole body trembled with my eyes staring at the phone with three numbers formulating in my mind.
He slowly took his hand away from my mouth. That would've given me more than ample time to grab the phone to call 911. Something told me not to do it, and I listened to my inner voice of reason and sound judgment.
"I was about to leave town, but I couldn't do it without first talking to you." Luke moved into the light.
"What are you doing here? Shouldn't you be hiding underneath a rock somewhere?" I asked with my back against the kitchen sink.
"You think you know all the facts but you don't. Do you know about the wolf? You don't have to answer. I can read everything on your face. I don't know how you found out. It certainly didn't come from me," Luke mentioned under his breath.
"It doesn't matter how I found out. Flex used me to obtain falsified identifications for all three of you. I don't know how his papers got past me but I have people looking into that. It was a serious breach of my trust. It's no wonder you came here instead of him. He's a coward," I announced with my eyes squinted.
