The nagging thought in the back of my mind wasn't something to ignore. This collection of emails made everything crystal clear. He had been working toward brokering a deal to buy the property in question. It had to be a lump sum and couldn't be made on a payment plan.
Further evaluation of the satellite images showed three different lakes and a mountain range in the distance. It showed a multitude of wild animals, including deer and elk.
A couple more keystrokes showed me his reluctant dealings with Smith in paper form. They had laced the new drug called Element X with wolf blood. They had found the right dosage that wouldn't kill but would give the users the ultimate high of strength and agility for a short time.
The news report came out the other day. The drug had virtually disappeared from the streets. It surprised many critics considering its latent potency. The addictive qualities made people nervous.
Flex had a pack of wolves outside looking in. They needed money to blend into their surroundings. A mention in the documents about me caught my eye.
"Sarah is oblivious to what I'm doing behind her back. We have several identities in the works. I don't know how much longer I can do this. The alpha should never have to stoop this low but it's for a good cause. We can live in harmony no longer feeling like wild animals in an urban jungle…"It went on for a few more sentences but I was drawn to those first few words.
I sat back to give it some serious thought.
A politician's life was never easy. We always had to have eyes in the back of our heads. It was the only way to see the knife about to stab us in the back. A kind smile meant nothing. Something lurked behind the grinning idiot.
Flex was different. His actions might've been a little hasty, however, it touched me deeply to see how far he was willing to go for his pack. He could've told me the truth but I'm not sure I would have believed him.
The best solution was to keep me in the dark. It had to be hard for him to live in both worlds at the same time.
I considered it for quite some time before finally coming to a painful conclusion.
I couldn't let him go without first talking to him. It was the only way to get any sort of closure. The police wanted him for questioning but there were no formal charges.
He didn't have to leave, but I was going to have to give him a good reason to stay.
CHAPTER 14
_____
FLEX
It was a somber affair; the coffin was laid to rest six feet deep and family gathered around to pay their last respects. The overwhelming burden of emotions couldn't be controlled.
The good detective was laid to rest.
Being there wasn't such a good idea. Thinking back on it made me understand the importance of keeping my distance. It wasn't like they could pin anything on me.
I had just returned from talking with the police. Luke played my lawyer. The interview took less than 10 minutes. They tried to slip me up, but my lawyer played his part brilliantly.
That was 24 hours ago.
We still didn't know what it was that killed Detective Coleman. My research into the archives found a scarce mention of something called Goliath. It was said to be a myth and legend, something to scare the little ones into eating their vegetables.
The down payment was made, and we were about to transition to a place off the grid and away from the human population. It still bugged me how she could think so little of me.
Our bags were packed, and we were going to leave behind several of the bigger items we couldn't take with us. We had one bag each to throw into the Jeep. It would be a tight fit, but we were going to make it work.
The three of them had left early to pick up supplies. It left me alone with my own thoughts and staring out the window when a taxi pulled up to the curb.
I wasn't expecting visitors.
Sarah got out after tipping the driver quite generously with a $20 bill. Nobody else would have been able to see the gratuity from that distance.
I walked to the door and swung it open to greet her.
She looked delicious in tight white-washed jeans and a pale yellow blouse with the first couple of buttons undone. An intense spritz of pheromones made a certain part of me stand up to take notice. She oozed this very powerful sexual desire.
My eyes traveled down over her hourglass frame. Every breath accentuated her chest until I was practically giddy with anticipation.
