Sarah was quite lovely, and I couldn't stop wondering what it would be like to kiss her. My heart was pumping fast and I had become flush.

Those two men found themselves on the receiving end of a beating. It felt good to wrestle control of the gun away from one of her assailants.

They reacted instinctively by going on the offensive. The knife glinted in my peripheral vision. It helped that I heard his labored breathing. It smelled like he had bathed in garlic.

I couldn't stand there and do nothing.

The bigger of the two lashed out with a lunging movement. Anybody else wouldn't have had the reflexes to avoid being stabbed to death. He found only air, and then I disarmed him with a quick strike to his wrist with the palm of my right hand.

A quick turn brought my elbow in contact with his ear seriously affecting his inner balance. The other one tried to intervene. It was his mistake that cost him the use of his eye.

Playing dirty was necessary from time to time to give them something to think about. The last thing I wanted to do was hurt them, but they didn't know when to call it a night.

The lights flickered as if there was some sort of power surge. It brought me back to the present.

It didn't surprise me to find Luke using the microwave. He yawned with his spine cracking.

He looked at me quizzically while reaching into the microwave to retrieve a fresh cup of coffee. It was the perfect temperature. He only had to blow on it once before taking his first sip.

I followed his gaze to my hand and shook my head. "You should've seen the other guy. I’ve cut myself worse shaving.”

"A package came for you while you were gone. It's on the table next to the door. You can't miss it. Do I even want to ask what happened? Would you give me a straight answer?" Luke said shirtless with a profound scar on his chest.

There were always casualties in any war. We were the byproduct of several months on the front line fighting for our freedoms. It wasn't anything the press would report on. The battle lines had been drawn between two factions.

There had always been tension, but it escalated into violence. Those that lost their lives were mourned by their loved ones.

"I would rather not talk about it. We live in uncertain times," I said while recalling rolling hills and fields of wildflowers for as far as the eye could see.

It would become a sanctuary for those ready for a new beginning.

"We should talk about the money," Luke intoned with his pockets turned inside out of his jeans.

"I know what you're going to say, and I don't want to hear it. We all have our jobs to do. I'm working on something. It's taking a little more time than I envisioned. We have hours before we sleep. Isn't that what was drilled into us when we were younger?" I answered while peeling back the brown packaging.

"We made a deal with swindlers and thieves. We can't trust them," Luke warned while holding the cup with two hands.

Jasper and Lincoln sat at the table drinking their coffee. They knew better than to interrupt an argument between me and Luke. They were loyal to a fault and never questioned my command.

"Don't you think I know that? It's not like we have much of a choice at the moment. Try to be a little more patient. Dammit. They only sent one set of identifications. We paid for three. We need to get an audience with Smith posthaste. Set it up. They are not going to get away with this," I said before dumping the contents on the table.

"We need funds. We have the demand but not the product." Luke referred to a unique drug, something laced with a bit of something extra to give it a punch.

The secret ingredient was our blood. It was quite addictive and could make you feel invincible for a short time. That was the beauty of it. It also sickened me to get people hooked on a substance that could easily kill them with the right dosage.

Getting our hands on identifications wasn't easy. It meant associating ourselves with people that didn't have any loyalty to anybody other than the almighty dollar.

It wasn't like we had proper identities.

The main point was to blend in.

We couldn't do that without the proper paperwork.

I squeezed my fist when a rush of endorphins coursed through my veins. The animal within wanted to come out to play. The tease of hurting those two men wasn't enough to satiate its blood lust. It couldn't remain caged for very much longer.

I had already denied it the chance to hunt during the full moon. That piece of me required determination and diligence.

Jasper and Lincoln looked up but didn't say a word. They were identical twins and could supposedly communicate without talking to one another.
