The buzzing of my phone vibrating through my dark pants made me look down at the screen. It appeared Sarah was out of the woods. A reliable source confirmed this for me. It was nice to know my money was good for something.

Having spies in the city came in handy.

My father told me you got what you paid for. I hated to admit it, but he was right.

Saving her life gave me the excuse I was looking for to see her again.

CHAPTER 3

_____

SARAH

A bruised rib and a dislocated shoulder weren't so bad. The police didn't have any leads. They promised to keep me up to date, but I wasn't holding my breath.

The camera outside the building didn't capture anything useful. The whole system was down for five minutes. They had planned for everything except for my handsome mystery hunk of a man intervening on my behalf.

The hospital room was sterile without any color. The white paint made me dizzy to look at it. It didn't help that my mother was hovering around making herself useful. She had come when she heard the news and had stayed by my side for the last couple of days.

She had to leave on pressing business.

The hospital gown wasn't very flattering. They told me I was lucky. The blade against my throat had nicked the skin. Any deeper and I might have bled out. They told me my good Samaritan was a hero. They were looking forward to shaking his hand, and they were not the only ones.

I had no idea how to find him.

I hadn't seen what he did, but I knew he could handle himself in a tough situation.

I used a compact to freshen up my makeup.

I didn't know his story.

"Penny for your thoughts?" My mother interrupted.

I had this vision that wasn't exactly PG rated. He looked absolutely delicious and made me hunger for a taste of what was hiding underneath the denim shirt. Every breath made me yearn and I experienced a free-floating intense sensation.

"I'm just worried about those working underneath me. I don't want my beliefs to hurt them. It looks like I'm going to have to take your advice and get some protection,” I said while biting my tongue at the mere notion of admitting when I was wrong.

"It's about time. You should have somebody looking out for your best interests. I'll make some phone calls and get a couple of quotes." She reached for her phone, but I took it away from her before she had the chance to dial.

"I've already got Jack working on it. He said he would be stopping by to discuss the particulars. It's something I should've done a long time ago," I lied.

Nothing was written down in stone.

It made sense on paper to have somebody with me during the many functions I was going to have to attend. It could've been far worse.

I considered myself lucky the man was in the right place at the right time to offer assistance.

"Did you think it was the opposition trying to scare you out of running?" My mother interjected.

"That was my first thought, but I don't think they would stoop that low. Smearing my name is one thing but attacking me is a little underhanded even for them. I'm not ruling anything out. I'm going to open up my own independent investigation," I uttered while clenching my teeth.

"Don't put it past them. You know he wasn't very happy when he found out you were running against him. He thought it was going to be a landslide victory. He never imagined you would be any kind of competition. What did the police say?" she asked, already knowing the answer since she was outside the room obviously eavesdropping on the police interview.

It made my heart skip a beat wondering about the possibilities of spending some alone time with the stranger carved out of my wildest fantasies.

It took less than a few seconds for him to take care of the problem and send those men packing with their tails between their legs.

My mother was a beautiful woman in her prime. I would be lucky to have her energy when I was ready to retire. She sat on the board of several committees.
