Half an hour later, the wheels went up, and the plane took to the sky. Right outside was a sky full of dark clouds and brilliant possibilities. But inside? In this plane was my whole world.
I’d moved half a dozen times in adulthood, chasing after people and things that didn’t deserve the effort. Now I had a life in my hometown and a dream of a man to share it with. I still had issues to work on, as did Miller. But we were headed in the right direction, and I could trust that he loved me for the real me.
Miller once told me I should never start a project assuming I would fail. He’d been right, and now was the perfect time to put that into practice.
I rested my head against my sleeping seatmate, loving the strength I felt beneath my cheek. When his hand reached for mine again, I smiled to myself, knowing the best was yet to come.
If this was what it was like to be chased, to be ardently pursued, I rather liked it.
“Hey.” Miller’s finger glanced across my cheek as he raised his head. “You never told me what your plan was if you got to San Francisco.”
I reached for the baked goods beneath my seat and offered him one. “That’s a story for another time.”
“Hattie Sutton…” Miller took a cupcake and kissed me breathless. “I’ve got years.”
