Ididn’t have to wait long before a pleadingplease,Revcame from her lips.

Karuswas a woman who could never be tamed.Herglow could never extinguish, andI’dbe a fool to try to control her.Butin those moments where her ecstasy relied on me,Iheld a power over her she had only ever letmewield.

AndIwielded it well.

Mypace picked up asIgave her what she’d begged me for a hundred times.Ifthere was anythingIwanted control over, it was this.Itwas the rhythm of my hips driving into her repeatedly while she bucked and writhed beneath my body.Itwas the flash of green in her eyes overtaking the black eyes of aBaron.

“Rev,” she panted asIthrust hard again and again, just as she liked it.

No.Sheloved it.

Itwas her last call to me thatIwas about to finish her into a state of limp euphoria, soIburied my face into her neck asIlet go of any of the waitIhad promised myself, spilling into her heat while her body slackened around me.

Ilet her fingers free and steadied myself above her on my elbows, sliding my hands through her hair to hold her head.

Ikissed her deeply, fully, barely letting her come up for air asItried to extend those moments of lust for her long after our bodies were spent.

Shelifted her hands through my hair and pushed me to lay on my side, draping that long, smooth leg over my hip.

Myback to the fire,Iwatched her green tendrils of magic pull the blanket off our bed and settle over our skin, streaked in the best kind of sweat.

Iwrapped my arm under her head and pulled my forehead to hers. “Whateverit is she said to you,I’llkeep you both safe, just asIpromised.”

Shenodded, pulling the cover up over our shoulders, brushing her lips across mine before closing her eyes and falling into a few more hours of sleep.

Chapter7

Karus

“Beets?”Iscowled at the array of food in front of me, curated by the one and onlyClairannia.

“Yes,Karus, beets.Everyone of these foods feeds your body which feeds your babe.”

Iglanced atFiguerah.Shesat across from me next to her companion,Nyeimah, with a face contorted in disgust.

“Justdon’t eat too many of those,”Clairanniacontinued, digging into a plate full of the breakfastIwishIwas eating. “Beetscan stain your teeth and make your pee pink.”

Ina tinge of nausea,Icovered my nose and mouth for a moment. “There’sno concern of eating too many,Clairannia.I’mnot sureI’llbe able to eat them at all.”

Ipicked up my fork and moved around some of the other foods on my plate.Myeggs had been scrambled with spinach, my strawberries had been chopped and mixed in some kind of tangy yogurt, and a vegetable hash had been fried in the form of purple potatoes, beets, onions, and carrots.

Nota single cinnamon bun graced my plate or the table.Noteven a gravy and sausage meat pie.

Ihad months left of this.

Exhalingswiftly out of my lips,Istabbed a forkful of beet and potato and brought it to my mouth to chew, closing my eyes to get it down while catching up to the conversation of which route was best to take to theAttatokMountains.Ournew channelers were still there, waiting for us to arrive.

“Idon’t think so, either,”Figuerahwas saying. “Goingtoo far east is risky.Weshould take theCarrowRoadto the west ofHyrithia. It’snot as straight of a journey, but it’s definitely safer.”

Clairanniaasked, “WhenisRevichreturning from retrievingMychael?”

Iforced a swallow from the mush in my mouth. “Latertonight.”

Shefilled her fork full of cheesy eggs and continued, “Haveyou discussed which of the channelers here you’re taking with you to the mountains?”

Ispeared a bit of egg on my fork, trying to convince myself to eat it. “We’rebringing all of them.”

Clairanniasputtered, “Allsix?Why?”
