“It is my business,” she says. “You left that gross email up on your computer. That’s sexual harassment. I could sue you and the whole company.”

“Do it,” I say. “Go ahead.” The more I try to blink the tears away, the more useless it becomes. “Go ahead and try. And I know you were snooping around on my computer. I didn’t leave that email open. It’s none of your business, and you were just searching for something to get me in trouble.”

I grab my coat and my bag and march over to Mr. Harper’s office.

“Come in,” he says, motioning toward me. “You get my email?”

I clear my throat and step forward tentatively.

“Yeah,” I say, “I did. But I’m really sorry. I need to put in my notice. I need to leave. Effective today.”

Harper sits there and doesn’t move. There’s something behind his eyes, but he doesn’t let on that he’s upset.

Maybe he isn’t. Maybe he’s going to just move right on to Joanna after I leave. I doubt she’d pass him up now that I’m out of the picture. It’s probably what she wanted all along.

“Your notice?” he scoffs. “I thought you liked working here.”

“I did. I do. It’s just that my design business is taking off, and I want to devote myself to that. You know,” I say, fibbing through the tears welling up in my eyes, “the thing I’m passionate about.”

“That’s great, Rebecca,” he offers. But now he’s ice cold. He doesn’t seem to give a crap that I’m leaving. He wouldn’t even care if I reallyweredoing great with my design business. All he cares about is his dick, and now that I’m leaving, it’ll be too inconvenient for him to have sex with me anymore. I know that he doesn’t care that it’s over between us. I can see it.

“It was nice working for you,” I say, heading out the door. “Thank you for the opportunity.”

“Maybe we can work together again sometime,” he says as I close the door behind me.

I march past Joanna without looking at her. When I get to the elevators, I don’t look back into the office. I can’t let them see my tears.
