Then up again.

Her fingers loosened—just slightly—as she kissed Noah’s head.

“I’m sorry, baby. Mama’s right behind you.”

She lifted him.

Grayson took him—steady, sure.

Then reached down for her.

A voice rang out behind her.

“Get down from there right now, or I’m calling the police!”

Charles.

She twisted halfway, balancing on the ladder, eyes blazing.

“Go ahead!” she shouted down. “Call them—tell them you locked me up and stole my baby. See how that goes.”

His face contorted with shock.

She didn’t wait for a reply.

She grabbed Grayson’s hand—and hauled herself over the wall.

Then down the other side, her feet finally hit solid ground.

Grayson gently handed Noah back to her. Then knocked the ladder down so Charles couldn’t follow.

And she realized—

She was free.

Chapter Ninety-Seven

The Road Out

Grayson guided them toward his truck.

He opened the back door and snapped a car seat into place.

“I wasn’t sure how old he was, so I brought two. Hope this one works.”

Lyric stared at him, throat tight.

He gently took Noah and buckled him in. “There we go, buddy. Safe and sound.”

She leaned in and kissed him one last time before climbing into the passenger seat.

The night felt endless, but the road ahead was waiting.

She looked over at him as he slid behind the wheel.

“Thank you,” she whispered.
