“You told me not to, so…”

“Good.” Lucy didn’t need to know anything beyond that, although she had a feeling that if Laceyhadread the article, she’d make it known. “Sorry. I was really dumb and submitted it under my real name. I had meant to use a pen name, but I…” She sighed. “I’ve been run ragged by everything going on lately. Between my contract getting cut short and everything going on with this virus…”

“Ugh! I never wanna hear about this dumb virus ever again. Apparently, another one of my classmates has tested positive. Luckily I haven’t seen him in forever, but I don’t know what to do now. Do we assume we’ve had it and lucked out?”

“I don’t know, sis, but I have a bad feeling that this is all gonna come crashing down on us soon enough.”

Lacey let out a dramatic sigh and jerked her thumb in the direction of dinner. “Want some pasta? Only the fourth time this week, am I right?”

Lucy allowed herself one small smile. “Give me a sec, all right? I don’t want to eat dinner dressed like this.”

She also didn’t want her sister seeing the sad look on her face after she closed the door and pulled the jacket off her body. Lucy had acquired this jacket at Gabriel Manor. She had worn it more times than she could count around Noah, and every time he tore it off her body like it was a mere nuisance. The fact it never actually ripped was a testament to its fine quality. Perfect for a New York magazine job interview.

Noah…She hated how much she thought about him, let alone with a wistful thought in her heart. For those few bewildering moments, she could pretend that everything was still all right between them. That they were in love, and Noah would make her his in all the ways she dreamed of during their brief time together. If my sister ever reads that article, I will be full of so much shame I won’t be able to look her in the eye again.

She would never see Noah again, that was for sure. She hadn’t heard from him since their last night together, and it was for the best. She told herself that every time she looked at her reflection in her vanity and remembered what it was like to live that quick, fanciful life.
