“Of course I am. I want you here, don’t I? Come back, Lucy.” His voice softened. “I have much to tell you. The truth, for one thing. I have a feeling you have a few truths to tell me as well. Such as your background as a writer.”
She said nothing.
“I’ll give you the day to decide. Call me back if you’ve decided to accept my offer, in which case I will have a car sent for you and your sister tomorrow. Pack whatever you need, but most of your clothes are still here.”
Lucy grimaced, mumbling something.
“What was that?”
“Do you have toilet paper?” she asked, louder.
At first, she wasn’t sure what that sound on the other side was. Then, when Noah stopped to catch his breath, Lucy realized that he had been laughing. It was her first time hearing him laugh like that.
Of course he had toilet paper. Why wouldn’t he?
