“You don’t think my family has been trying for decades to do just that?”

“Well, if Porters and Putnams were once the same family, there must be something in Porter history that can reverse the spell, right?” He demands. “Some spell written down somewhere?”

“We don’t have a grimoire,” I answer uneasily. “Since ours was lost, my family never started a new one. Plus, with our magic dwindling, there was no need. . . but, we do have some books in our library.”

“Lead the way,” Preston commands, and my ovaries come to attention.

He’s bossy, too,they whisper.

“Follow me,” I say with a tight smile, ignoring my inner tarts.

Kai, though, is staring at me like he can hear them—and knows what happened.

I swallow thickly when his nostrils flare.

Shit.

He totally knows something is up.

“Ah, here’s the library, full of books. Books galore. So many books—”

“You’re rambling, love,” Preston points out, stepping in.

Of course, I’m rambling.

I’m more nervous than a witch in a church.

“Do you have something to tell us?” Kai demands when we go into the room.

“Ummmmmm. . . thanks for getting Putnam to save me—but let me die next time. I hate him! Now, let’s find something to undo this hex!”

Both Preston and Kai share a ‘what the fuck’ look but, thankfully, start going through reading material.

Phew.

Can you imagine confessing what I did with Bellamy to these two?

A new thought occurs to me:

Can you imagine confessing what I did with Bellamy to my Gram-Gram?!

Nope.

It’s settled—no one can ever know about what happened between Putnam and me in that dressing room.

* * *

“Ugh, there’s nothing in here!” I groan, slamming the book before me closed. We’ve spent the last day and a half scouring books, pamphlets, and even resorted to the internet for information on how to break the hex now that I have a sliver of magic.

Not that it’s all that useful at this point, but what can you do?

“There has to be something,” Preston mutters, sounding as defeated as I did. Gram and the rest of the family were out for the day running various errands leaving Kai, Preston, and me alone.

You would think being alone would lead to sexy fun.

But no—I’m stuck studying as if I’m in school all over again.

On the upside, my ovaries are so disgusted, they aren’t talking to me.
