"I have a very bad feeling about this network," I whisper, but before I can say much else, we're once again interrupted by a knock on the door.

This time, though, is because we were about to start filming.

I guess one way to deal with the problem is jumping from the pan into the fire.

Poorly placed pun very much intended because, if I'm right, I’m about to be dealing with something I am woefully unprepared too.

Good thing nothing stands in the way of this witch bitch from getting what needs to be done finished.

It's not nice to call people names, but the network is not a person—it is a demon from the deepest bowels of hell sent here to earth to torment me.

And that is why I don't feel bad when I say the network can go fuck itself.

Not only does it set a time limit on this final trial, but I also have to do it in my sleep, in a room alone, on camera, with Bellamy.

I know what you're thinking—you two have fucked; what's the deal?

FYI: just because you screw someone doesn't mean that you like them. I still hate Bellamy's guts, just like he hates mine. And I still want him to fuck my guts, just like I assume he wants to fuck mine.

But this competition isn't about fucking—if it were, the network would have far higher ratings.

No, it's about winning, and I have to win if I want to save my family’s legacy. It's not fair that I have Kai’s magic and nobody else in my family gets any. Although, I would like to point out that it came at a super steep price—me being bonded to a man who's been a cat for so many centuries. They say old habits die hard, but if he ever brings me a mouse for a present or hacks up a fur ball, I'm putting him out on the back porch.

I might be unhappy about the current situation but, from the looks of it, Bellamy is even more displeased. It's a struggle for me to keep my face neutral—Bellamy doesn't even try. His dark scowl burns across the fake audience and employees of the network, promising retribution—a deadly one. Content that Porter will take care of the network for me, I focus on this final trial, the Sorcerer’s Sign.

I mentally scoff at their nonsense, but the network is playing up the Salem witch trials for theirmodern daywitch hunt. It only makes sense that they would try to use something that was once used back in the trials calledspectral evidence. The ‘evidence’ was witness testimony against the accused, saying that their spirit appeared to the witness in a dream, while at the time the accused person's physical body was at another location.

A totally verifiable reason to burn someone at the stake, right?

Ironically, it's exactly what the network wants, too—to prove that we are actually witches.

Only with no burning this time.

I hope.

A chill races down my spine at the thought, and I shoot Bellamy side glance. Is this really what the network is trying to find out?Is it just coincidence that the two real witches—excluding Bodie the Dick—from the show are the last two in the trials?

The host of Modern Day Witch Hunt, Carter Foress, is blabbing on camera while I stand there looking like a deer caught in the headlights.

What is the network's aim?

What are they planning?

What do they want?

Or am I looking too deeply into something when I need to focus on the grimoire instead?

No—I know that I'm onto something. Just like when Kai’s magic recognized Bodie’s intent, it senses something is afoot. But I don’t have time to ponder it because Carter announces the start of the trial.

“Son of a bitch,” I mutter under my breath, chasing after Bellamy.

We walk into a darkened room where the door shuts behind us—and locks. I know that I need to focus on this trial, but it's creepy as fuck. Right now, the network is up to something. Bellamy is searching the room, looking for his clue. I better move my ass if I want to find mine. Taking a calming breath, I reach out with Kai’s magic to comb the room. Mostly it just reaches out to Bellamy—something that pisses me off to no end.

Magic must love other magic.

Shoving that aside, I continue mentally searching. I pour all my anxiety through my bond with Kai, hoping that he'll feel it and tell Preston. . .what?

What can Preston do?
