“I don’t know, but he’s always there, watching - not in a creepy way.”

“A sexy way?”

“Well… yeah I guess. I think I…”

“What?”

“I think I like him, but that’s dumb, I’ve barely spoken to him.”

“Sounds to me like you need to keep going there. See things through.”

“Maybe.”

“Maybe what? There’s no maybe here,” she places her hands on her hips.

“What if I’m just imagining he’s interested? Or maybe he’s just enthralled with all this dating humor I’ve offered. Or he feels sorry for me. I don’t know what he’s really thinking, about me and what he’s observed, and if I should even trust myself after these other dates. Clearly my judgement has been lacking.”

“That’s just silly, but you know what I think?”

“What?”

“Things just got more interesting,” she lifts and lowers her eyebrows humorously over and over.

“So glad I can amuse you with all of this.”

She turns toward the employee entrance at the back of the building, stops with her hand on the door handle and looks all around us. I can’t help but do the same wondering what she’s looking for. I don’t see anyone or anything out of the ordinary, so I look back at her curiously.

“What are you doing?” I ask.

“Do you think he-“she pauses. “No, never mind.”

“He who?”

“Your date last night. Eric.”

“What about him? Do I think what?”

“I shouldn’t even ask. You’ve been through enough.”

“That’s for damn sure. Maybe you shouldn’t then.”

“But I can’t help but think it…”

“Given the look on your face, I’m not sure I want to know.”

“You’re right. I’ll just keep it to myself.”

“No, you won’t. Just say whatever it is already, because you won’t let it go until you do.”

“It’s scary how well you know me,” she says.

“Let’s hear it,” I can see the mischievous thought behind her eyes. She’s not fooling me; whatever she’s thinking she finds hilarious.

“Do you think he wears his nose when he has sex too?”

“Oh my god, Kimberly, gross!”

“I mean, it’s a logical question. He didn’t even realize he was still wearing it while he talked with you, ate, drank…”
