Our first overnightdidn’t happen until a month into whatever we were calling things.Ambrose texted me on a Thursday.

Ambrose:Bethany has a lock-in thing at the community center in San Clemente this weekend.

Me:Oh?

Ambrose:I’m trying to be subtle here… * tongue sticking out emoji, peach emoji, water droplets emoji *

Me:So subtle, much wow.

Ambrose:Omg, how old are you?

Me:Old enough to take you over my knee.

Me:Wait…

A string of emojis followed, then Ambrose texted,Want to meet at your place? So Edward doesn’t have to go to Naomi’s?We don’t need to do anything other than hang out, but I’d really like to see you this weekend.

I made the mistake of telling Edward about the plan (well, the gist of it anyway) while I made dinner Thursday night.

“I get to have asleepover?” he’d asked in hushed tones.“Seriously?”

“Well, kind of,” I started, but he was off and running, so to speak.By the time he helped me load the dishwasher after we’d eaten, he’d laid out his grand plan for the Big Boy Sleepover, as Friday night had now been named.“Baby, I don’t know if we’ll be able to watch six movies in a row.Ambrose and I are old, remember? We’ll fall asleep.”

He stopped, glancing up at me from where he’d been arranging the silverware into the wash basket.“That’s why we’re drinking a lot of soda, Dad,” he said.Duh, Dad, get with the program!

Ambrose, god bless him, was more than a good sport about Edward’s excited plans for the evening. He showed up just before dinner on Friday, grabbing the front of my shirt as soon as I opened the door and pressing a feverish, open-mouthed kiss to my lips.“Hello,” he breathed as soon as we broke for air.“I’ve been thinking very rude thoughts about you all afternoon.I was making candlestick cupcakes and when you put the banana half on top, it looks like a great big—”

“Hey!Guess what?Dad said I could pick the movies tonight, so I pickedStar TrekandStar Wars. They’re super different but really similar too.You know how?”

Ambrose switched fromI want to fuck you against this wall right nowto wide-eye fascination in a heartbeat, dropping into a crouch to get on Edward’s level.“Well, you gotta tell me are we talking about the original Trek, or the reboot of the movies? And which gen ofStar Wars?Prequels, sequels, main series,Rogue One—”

Edward heaved a dramatic sigh and grabbed Ambrose’s hand.“Yes.All of that.Come on!”

And that is how I ended up putting together everyone’s veggie burgers while Edward and Ambrose discussed the finer points of droids in the mainStar Warsmovies.Edward hauled out his prized collection of Star Wars ship toys and lined them up on the coffee table while we ate.“This one is a B-wing,” he informed Ambrose.“And this one is a Y-wing.”

“Sounds like you know a lot about a lot of things,” Ambrose said.“Beetles,Star Wars… I bet you know a lot about,” he glanced around the room, catching sight of the basket of pinecones on one of the end tables, meant to look decorative.“Trees,” he extemporized.“Especially conifers.”

Edward shrugged.“Trees are cool, but I like beetles andStar Warsbetter.”He climbed onto the sofa between us, handing Ambrose his Y-wing.“You can hold that one during the first movie, then Dad gets it during the second.”

I caught Ambrose’s eye over Edward’s head.“He likes you,” I mouthed.

Ambrose grinned.“Because I’m awesome,” he mouthed back.

Edward held court until halfway throughRevenge of the Sith. Then he just sort of slumped over and that’s all she wrote.

“Bed?”Ambrose asked against the side of my neck, moving in for a kiss when I came back to the sofa after putting Edward to bed.“Or another movie?”

“Bed,” I’d breathed.“Let’s find out if the orgasms are still as good when we’re not in my car or office.”

They very definitely were.

“Dad?”

Shit.I barrel rolled off my bed, hitting the wooden floor with a thump I’d feel for the rest of the day, at least.I managed to pull the comforter with me, leaving Ambrose under the thin top sheet.“Hey, kiddo,” I called back through the thankfully still closed door.“What’s up?”
