“Whoa, whoa, whoa. You can’t go. Give me the address, I’ll go.”
“No, I’m coming, too.” Exhaustion coursed through her, but the worry overrode it. She pushed her muscles to move as she rose from the bed.
“Juju, I can go check his place. I’ll call you from there.”
“I’m going, Ally.” The insistence in her voice made her sister back down.
“Okay, fine. Just wait here. I’m taking my gun.”
Julia eased onto the side of the bed and pulled her shoes on as she waited for her sister’s return. Agitation built inside her, tightening her grip on her phone. She hoped her sister was correct, and they’d find Kyle at his apartment, hiding from the conflict, but the majority of her knew they wouldn’t. Something was very wrong.
Alicia hurried back into the room. “Please tell me we don’t have to sneak past Grant’s office.”
“No, we’ll go out the back, past the pool, and to the garage.”
“Okay, but I draw the line at you driving.”
“So, do I. You drive.”
“Oh wait, drive what?”
“My car,” Julia said as she crossed to the door.
“The Porsche?” Alicia said, her voice incredulous.
“Yeah. It’s fine.”
Alicia wrinkled her nose at the idea as Julia pulled her hair into a ponytail and led her through the halls to a back staircase. They sneaked from the house and hurried across the lawn to the garage.
By the time they slipped into the car, Julia was glad to sit down. Alicia fired the engine and eased the car forward. “I really prefer the police cruiser.”
“You’ll be fine,” Julia answered as she typed in Kyle’s address on the GPS. “There’s a garage under the building, just pull in there when we get there.”
Alicia nodded as she glanced at the screen and aimed for Kyle’s place. “So, the doc is a habitual line-crosser, huh?”
“He is,” Julia said as the buildings filled in around them. “Kyle has never met a line he wouldn’t cross.”
“How in the world do people actually live here? There is traffic everywhere. There are more cars on this road than in Harbor Cove.”
“Very funny, Ally. Just take your time. But also hurry up.”
“If we find this kid laying on his couch watching reruns ofDexterwith a bowl of popcorn, I’m going to kill you for making me drive this car through the city.”
“If we find Kyle eating popcorn on his couch, I will call James to come get us and drive us home. After he gets a long lecture from me.”
“Wow, you’ve really gone Mom mode with this family.”
Julia offered a sarcastic laugh before she pointed to a building. “There. That’s his building.”
Her heart thudded faster against her ribs as her sister pulled into the garage and found a parking spot. Julia scanned the garage for any signs of Kyle’s car. She found none.
Before Alicia killed the engine, Julia was out of the car. “Come on. Elevator’s this way.”
Julia poked at the button over and over until the doors opened.
“Relax, Julia. We’ll get there.”
Julia huffed out a sigh as the elevator rose to Kyle’s floor. Turning sideways, she squeezed out as the doors started to slide open and hurried to his door, banging on it. “Kyle?”
