“No, this will be fine.I can find something to eat a little later.I’m feeling a little nauseous.”
Aaron headed back to his room, and Sarah went to wake the girls.
Later, as the girls sat at the table eating their breakfast, Mia said, “Do we have to go to school?Why can’t we stay here with Aaron?”
“Aaron needs quiet time to rest and get better.A little later, Lucy is going to come and stay at the house until it’s time to pick you up.”
“Can we say goodbye to him?”asked Emily.
“If he’s awake, you can go in his room and tell him,” Sarah said.She was beginning to wonder if this idea of Aaron staying with them was a good idea.The girls were getting too attached to him.
After the girls were dressed and Sarah was ready to leave with them, she allowed the girls to check on Aaron.Both of his dogs were lying on the floor by his bed.When they saw the girls, they got up and went over to greet them, wagging their tails.
Aaron sat up.“Ready for school?”he asked the girls.
“Yes, but we want to say goodbye,” said Mia.
Unprepared for two girls racing to him and giving him hugs, he was thrown back against the pillow.The girls left him as quickly as they’d arrived.
Sarah watched him closely to see his reaction.
Aaron drew a deep breath, clutched his head, and managed to smile.
Relieved, Sarah gave him a little wave.“We’ll see you later today.Lucy should arrive by ten o’clock.She’s promised to help but will stay out of your way.”
“Thanks for everything,” Aaron said, leaning back against the pillow.

Sarah piled the girls into the car and drove them to their preschool.There, she parked and got out of the car thinking it might be smart to tell the teachers why Aaron was staying with them.
Inside, one of the teachers came over to her.“I heard from a neighbor that Aaron was brought to the emergency clinic with a concussion.Is he alright?”
“Hard to keep anything quiet in this town, huh?”said Sarah.
The teacher gave her a knowing look.“That’s Lilac Lake.”
Chuckling, Sarah said, “I thought I should let you know that Aaron is staying with the girls and me for a few days to get some rest.That’s all it is.”
“Okay, thanks for telling us,” said the teacher.“I assume Lucy will pick up the girls this afternoon.”
“Right.Thanks,” said Sarah, glad to get the correct details of Aaron’s stay out to the public.

Dani was already inside turning on the store lights when Sarah arrived.Sarah grinned.She’d been right about making Dani part of the ownership.She was a loyal, hard worker.
“Glad to see you here,” said Sarah.“Sorry I’m late.I was held up at the girls’ preschool.”
Dani gave her a look of concern.“How’s Aaron?I heard about his accident and that he’s staying with you.”
Sarah let out a long sigh.“I guess everyone knows he’s at my house.He’s going to be fine, but he took a significant bump on the head and needs lots of rest.And Emmett said he didn’t want Aaron to be alone.My babysitter for the girls is coming to stay at my house until I get home from work.”
“How are you doing?”Dani asked.“It must have been frightening.”
“I was really shaken by seeing him lying in the snow.It reminded me so much of how I found my husband.But I’m glad I was there, so I could get help for him.He was unconscious for several minutes.That’s why it’s so important for him not to be left alone.”
Dani’s lips curved into a wicked smile.“So, what’s it like to have a man around the house again?”
