“Whatever. It did seem like everything started happening faster after it was confirmed.”
“I wouldn’t be surprised if you start showing soon. You are a little already, but it’s probably because I studied your body like it was the police academy test.”
I looked down. “For real?”
I placed my hand over my stomach but couldn’t feel much.
“Yes, but it’s very subtle.” Kyden kissed the side of the mouth. “Don’t worry about it.”
We continued walking through the field, but we hadn’t picked any more strawberries. I had enough to last a little while as long as they didn’t go bad. I would probably freeze some of them since I wouldn’t be able to get any more until they were back in season.
“I know. Ooh, they have strawberry funnel cakes over there.”
I practically dragged Kyden over to the food truck that advertised its funnel cakes. The pictures on the side of the truck made my mouth water. I hoped they tasted as good as they looked.
“Slow down, girl. Them cakes ain’t going anywhere,” Kyden fussed.
“I want to get in line before anybody else comes.”
He chuckled but picked up his pace. There were only two other people in line, so we stood behind them. Kyden and I had been holding hands the whole time we had been there. Of course, along the way, people stopped him to talk about some ofeverything. Some of them just wanted him to relay messages to his brother. I knew my sister probably got it worse when she and Kaleb went out since he was the mayor, and people treated him like a celebrity.
When it was our turn to order, Kyden ordered two, and when he told them one more to go, my inner fat girl did a little shimmy.
“You know the way to a girl’s heart,” I said after he paid for the cakes. I tried to pay for things, but he wouldn’t let me. After the second time I tried, I gave up.
“I already have your heart.” He winked then led me over to a small table with a strawberry tablecloth.
There was even a strawberry-shaped flowerpot with red and white flowers in it. Kyden thought they went overboard with the strawberry stuff, but I thought it was cute. It reminded me of a cartoon I used to watch when I was a kid.
“And I have yours,” I reminded him.
“And I don’t want it back.”
I didn’t respond because I was too busy breaking off a piece of the funnel cake. I closed my eyes when the strawberry taste hit my tongue.
Kyden’s eyes cut toward me when I moaned. There was something about good food that made me shimmy or moan. Sometimes, I did both.
“Elise.”
He only said my name, but I knew the meaning behind his tone. I ate another piece and moaned again to mess with him. He watched me with hooded eyes, and I moaned a few more times.
“Let’s not pretend like I won’t take you somewhere and fuck you in the back of my truck.”
I paused mid-chew and stared at him as my panties got wet. I challenged him before when he first said it, but he quickly proved me wrong. Kyden knew all of the hiding places aroundtown, and since he was the sheriff, he didn’t worry about getting caught. We’d only done it a couple of times, but I enjoyed it each time.
“I’m not pretending anything. I’m just trying to eat my cake.”
I put another piece in my mouth, but this time, I kept my moans to myself. I was horny and ready, but I wanted to finish my cake.
“What was it like growing up here?”
“I see what you are trying to do, and that’s fine, but I’m still fucking you in my truck.”
I smirked. “I was counting on it. Now, answer my question.”
Kyden and I had plenty of conversations, but I never asked him much about his childhood. Sweetwater Hills was a small town, so I assumed he couldn’t have done too much, but I’d been to some of the town meetings, and I knew there were a few families that had some secrets. Ms. Pearl, the town’s gossip, made sure to tell Janae and me people’s business almost every time we saw her.
“I wouldn’t say it was like anywhere else, but I’ve dealt with shit most kids and teenagers go through . . . fights and shit like that. I got into a fight with some kids from North Valley after they transferred to our elementary school, and they teased Kaleb and me because our father was the mayor. They were in a world of surprise when my brother and I beat them up. It was the two of us against the two of them.”
