Kyden and I had played a few rounds of pickleball, and I beat him each round. I tried to take it easy on him since it was his first time, but we both were pretty competitive.
I didn’t play that often, but it helped with my mental and physical fitness, and I figured it would help him too.
Things had been going well for the last couple of months. We spent a lot of time together rebuilding our relationship after the whole ex-wife fiasco. I didn’t understand why he never told meabout his marriage, but it didn’t matter because that was in his past, and I was his present and future.
It was all about our relationship and our future together. We actively tried for another baby, but it hadn’t happened at the moment. We knew that it would happen whenever it was our time.
“Looks like you having trouble over there,” I teased.
“Serve the ball, Elise.” Kyden stood up straight and got into position.
I giggled, then mumbled, “Testy much.”
“I heard that.” He clapped his hands. “Let’s go.”
I got in position and hit the ball toward him. I screamed and threw my paddle down when he missed.
Jumping up and down, I shouted, “I won!”
Kyden picked up the ball and walked over to my side. “Calm down. I let you win.”
I cut my eyes at him and twisted my lips. “Okay.”
He picked me up and tickled my stomach, making me squirm in his arms.
“Ky, stop before you make me pee on myself,” I said through my laughter.
He placed me back on the ground and kissed my lips. “We don’t need you doing all of that out here. Come on, so you can go to the bathroom.”
He picked up our paddles and the balls we used, then put them in the bag.
I had to use the bathroom for like ten minutes, but I didn’t say anything since we were in the middle of a game. Plus I was in the lead, so I had to win first.
With the bag in one hand and my hand in the other, Kyden led us over to the park’s bathroom. I hated using public restrooms, but I wasn’t going to be able to wait until we got to one of our houses.
When I was done, we walked to his car. He opened the door for me and closed it when I got situated. I heard the trunk close before he got in the driver’s seat.
“Whose house are we going to?” he asked as he turned the key in the ignition.
“Doesn’t matter to me. Since you have to work tomorrow and I don’t, we can go to yours. We have to get Gizmo first if I’m staying the night.”
Kyden and I kept clothes and toiletries at each other’s houses, so we would be prepared wherever we stayed. I also kept things at his house for my cat because I didn’t like leaving him home alone for too long. I loved that cat so much, and having him showed us how well we could work together when we had a child.
“We’ll stop and get him, then head to my place. I just got him some new toys.” Kyden smiled. He spoiled Gizmo, the cat he’d gotten me a while ago, just as much as I did. I rested my head against the seat as he pulled out of the parking lot. I closed my eyes, but I wasn’t sleepy. I just thought about how well everything had been going.
Jazz music flowed from the speakers at a low volume, relaxing me more than I already was. Kyden rested his hand on my knee, and before I knew it, I had fallen asleep.
Two hours later, Kyden and I were showered and changed into loungewear. Gizmo played on the floor with his new toys while we sat on the couch eating dinner.
While I soaked in the tub, Kyden cooked us cheesesteaks and fries.
“Do you think monogamy is a natural thing, or do you think society and social media is making it more acceptable to have open relationships?” I asked Kyden because of the reality show that played on television. On the show, the couple was looking for a third party, and I wondered what Kyden thought of it.
He took a swig of his beer, then slightly turned toward me.
“Honestly, monogamy has always been my thing, and that’s how I plan to keep it. That was all I saw growing up. Now, I will say that open relationships could be beneficial to some people, but everyone has to agree with the rules.”
“Hell no.” I practically shouted.
