“There is if you never have fun.” Nex took a bite of the Pop-Tart, then offered it to her. “Come on. It tastes much better than the living bacteria you’re about to consume.”

“Go away.” Kat picked up a spoon and opened her yogurt, turning away from him to eat.

He materialized in front of her and stole the spoon as she brought it to her lips, placing it in his mouth and dragging it down with a frown. He grunted. “Eh, not as good as a Pop-Tart.”

Kat snatched the spoon and rinsed it.

Nex rolled his eyes. “What’s wrong? Afraid I have cooties?”

“Stop talking.”

Kettle whistling, she left the spoon in her mouth while she dropped a tea bag in the mug. Steam rose as she poured in hot water, carrying a jasmine aroma with it.

“Wouldn’t a microwave be faster?”

“Stop analyzing my habits,” Kat snapped, eating her yogurt angrily.

Nex whistled, crossing his arms over his exposed chest. “Someone’s grumpy. What’s wrong, kitten? Wasn’t it nice to not wake up alone? Or is the reason you’re upset because I didn’t do anything to ease your tension? If that’s the case, head back to bed, open those pretty legs, and I’ll eat you for breakfast.”

The comment froze her. A heated sensation zapped through her, and she took a deep breath, not indulging him with another word. Disregarding his nonstop comments, she finished her yogurt and sipped her tea. Once she was done, she washed her dishes and went out the door.

Outside in the crisp, cold air, Nex came alongside her, dressed like a normal person again. “Where are we going? I suggest somewhere downtown where drug addicts run rampant. How about a dealer who sells to children? Surely you can’t find something wrong with killing someone like that.”

Kat continued on while Nex listed potential people to kill. She turned down another street, and Nex grabbed her elbow, making her face him as he glared down at her.

“This is fucking ridiculous. Don’t make me take this too far,” he said, running his finger down her cheek. “Because I don’t want to, but I will.” He pulled her against him, making her gasp. “If you force me to, I’ll take it too far to get my freedom back.”

She stiffened in his arms at the sensation of his hand sliding up her dress, along her thigh. His nose skimmed her neck, and it left tingles behind. Hand ascending higher, he nearly grazed her butt.

“A name, kitten,” he murmured. “Or you’ll beg me to fuck you, and when I’m gone, you’ll hate yourself for letting me take you after saving yourself so long.”

“You’re unbelievable.” Kat found her resolve and pulled away. “What’s wrong with you? How could you threaten me with something like that? You’re disgusting.” She wrapped her arms around herself and continued toward her destination.

Nex muttered several curses before following. “I’m sorry, kitten. Can’t you understand I’m desperate to get home? Can’t you—” He stumbled back.

Kat glanced over her shoulder with furrowed brows.

Nex frowned, then gazed up. “You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.” He glared at the steeple and stained-glass windows. “You’re going tochurch?”

“So?”

“Are you doing this to spite me, or is this legitimately who you are?”

“You’re really self-centered, you know that? Of course I’m not doing it to spite you. I come every week.”

“But church is so . . .” He scrunched his nose. “You can’t believe the shit they teach. You’re annoying, but you’re not stupid.”

“I summoned a demon, Nex.” Kat arched a brow. “I need to go now more than ever.”

“I’m not going to hurt you! We’ve already established I’m incapable. Come on.” He inclined his head to the street. “Let’s work something out.”

“You threatened me for the second time.”

“It wasn’t a legitimate threat, for fuck’s sake.” Nex ran his hand through his hair. “We’re bonded. My powers won’t work on you. I can’t force you to do anything.”

“Still wrong of you to say.” Kat held her ground. “You’re trying to hurt me with words since you can’t with actions. You think that’s better?”

Expression strained, Nex paced. “Come on, kitten. Let’s talk this out. Let’s get something to eat.”
